Stesser castle

The Stesser Burg is a wooded mountain located on the Ruhr at 326.7  m above sea level . The hill fort of the same name from the Iron Age is located on it .

location

The mountain is located north of the towns of Stesse and Calle in the Kelbke valley , town of Meschede . The mountain is part of the 160.7 hectare Ruhrtal nature reserve near Laer and is largely covered with beech forest.

Wallburg

On the mountain cone are the earth pouring of an Iron Age hill fort . Below the mountain peak, a terrace broken into the rock with a vertical rear wall runs around the western and southern flanks of the mountain. This was the main obstacle to accessing the population. Further artificial cuts were made deeper on the mountainside to reinforce the fortifications. In the north and east there were no significant fortifications due to the steepness of the slopes. Only in the northwest was there a real wall to secure the flanks almost as far as the Ruhr River.

The complex probably dates from the pre-Roman Iron Age.

In 1984 the Iron Age castle was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Meschede.
