Entrance gate to the Hünenburg

The Hünenburg is an early medieval hill fort in the Stöttinghausen district of the city of Twistringen in the Diepholz district in Lower Saxony .

The Hünenburg was probably built as a protective castle in the years 500 to 900 AD. There are no written documents about the castle from this period.

origin of the name

How the Hünenburg got its current name cannot be clearly determined. The local community Scharrendorf names a variety of theories on this. Castles, which were assumed to have served the surrounding population as a place of refuge in times of war, were called "Heune" or "Hünenburgen" throughout Germany , long before the time when the legends were created that gave the respective names Should justify the castle.

Location of the Hünenburg in the network of castles and old streets

The Hünenburg is strategically located near a river (here: the Delme ) on a headland of the Syker Geest , which merges into the moor (here: the Diepholzer Moorniederung ) , which is typical for a protective castle in the North German lowlands . This meant that you only had to defend the complex from one side.

The main purpose of the Hünenburg was to protect an old road that connects the Weser with the Hunte and belongs to the “ folk paths ” genus . The Folkweg near Twistringen, like the Hünenburg , is said to have been prepared in the years 500 to 900 AD. “Folk routes” were primarily trade routes; it is said to have existed in northern Germany as early as 3000 years ago. The Twistringer Folkweg is part of an old road that begins on the Ems near Lathen , runs in two arms over the Hümmling , which unite at Werlte , from there via Lindern , Cloppenburg , Visbek and Bühren to Bassum , the Weser and (near Verden ) the Aller crosses and from there towards the Lüneburg Heath . To the west of the Hunte, this path is also called “ Reuterweg ”, “ Herzog-Erich-Weg ” and “ Kriegerpad ”. The archaeologist Bernhard Uhl assigns the Hünenburg together with the fortifications Sierhauser Schanzen , Quatmannsburg bei Elsten and Heidenwall Dehlthun as supporting forts of the Arkeburg as the main castle.

Appearance and usage

The Hünenburg is a round earth wall about 3 meters high and about 15 meters wide at the base. This earth wall was piled up from grass and heather plugs, cross-beams were used for stiffening. On the outside, the earth wall was protected by a trench 3.5 meters wide and 1.50 meters deep. There was a wooden gatehouse in the entrance area.

Iron age

During excavations in 1932, which were carried out under the direction of Ernst Sprockhoff , Iron Age ceramics were found. It can be assumed that there was a Thingstätte at the site of the Hünenburg at that time (the place name “Stöttinghausen” could refer to “The Place of Things”).

middle Ages

During the excavations in 1932, the remains of buildings that stood in the Hünenburg were also found. However, there were no remains of floors and hearths, which does not suggest permanent housing. Weapons or other war material were also not found, so that it can be assumed that there were no armed conflicts in the vicinity of the Hünenburg .

present

In 2005 the wooden entrance gate to the Hünenburg was reconstructed. The city of Twistringen justifies the redesign of the facility with the fact that “its ancient value should be better embodied for all visitors”. The facility is used by various groups for events. It is a popular starting point for cyclists. The main building, which has also been completed, has a kitchen and sanitary facilities. A bakery was added to the facility. The “AltSachsenRing” group organizes camps in the summer with various groups that “deal intensively with the life and work of our ancestors”.
