Emergence

The organization was founded in 1992 by the Mainz dental technician Kurt Assmuss. Assmuss had become aware of the problematic to catastrophic conditions in Romanian children's and old people's homes when the country became the focus of public attention in Europe in 1989 as a result of the revolution against the Nicolae Ceaușescu regime . The reports, and in particular the video recordings, which after decades of extensive isolation of Romania from the western world, now reached the German-speaking area, painted the picture of a population living in the poorest of circumstances. Among other things, they revealed that the health and social services in particular suffered from a dramatic shortage of staff, medicines, energy, fuels and even food. Assmuss, who had already been involved in Karlheinz Böhm's humanitarian organization “ Menschen für Menschen ” and had the right contacts, responded by organizing the transport of relief supplies. Between January 1990 and the end of 1992, Assmuss and his initiative “Mainz helps” were able to set twelve trucks with food, medicine, hygiene articles, tools and building materials on the move, renovate several homes and equip some businesses with power supply and machines. The “Basel helps” initiative, the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund , the International Building Order and the International Police Association acted as cooperation partners. On February 4, 1992 , the “Mainz helps” initiative was incorporated into today's association, which soon expanded its activities from Romania to other countries in Eastern Europe.
