HMS Tarpon (N17) was a submarine of the British Royal Navy . The warship was used in World War II and was lost in the North Sea in April 1940 .

The HMS Tarpon was in service for just over a month and only a few days in combat. The submarine left the Rosyth base on April 5, 1940 for the Norwegian coast to begin its first patrol. Four days later the German invasion of Denmark and Norway began with the Weser Exercise company .

On April 10, HMS Tarpon changed position. There has been no news from her since then. The Royal Navy officially declared the submarine missing on April 22, 1940. The entire crew was killed.

It may have been sunk on April 14, 1940 by the German M 6 minesweeper with depth charges. Another explanation is that she was sunk on April 10, 1940 west of Jutland at 56 ° 43 '  N , 6 ° 33'  E by the German submarine trap Schiff 40 / Schürbek .

In March 2016, the HMS Tarpon was found and identified by Gert Normann, a Danish professional diver, in the North Sea near Thyborøn .
