In 1940, six new boats from the second batch were launched and six pre-war boats from the first batch were put into service. On April 9, the German Reich extends the war to Scandinavia with the Weser Exercise Company . Since the German landing operation is expected by the British forces, a large number of the T-class submarines are also stationed in the approach area of the invasion fleet. There are several combat successes, but also the first two losses. The German campaign in the west was followed by the Italian entry into the war and the French defeat in summer, after which the area of operation of the British submarines expanded into the Biscay and the eastern and central Mediterranean. In autumn, two more boats are sunk in the Mediterranean by the Italian Navy .

1941
In 1941, the first eleven units of the third construction section were laid down and six units of the first and second construction section were put into service. This is offset by a loss in the Mediterranean, so that by the end of the year 15 units are in service with the Royal Navy. In addition to the operations in the North Sea, the focus of operations is shifting to the Mediterranean, where action is being taken against the Axis' supply routes in the war in North Africa . As a result of the German-Italian Balkan campaign and the subsequent airborne battle for Crete in the spring, the eastern Mediterranean also became a battlefield for British submarines. The bases on the Mediterranean are in the British crown colony of Gibraltar in the west, in Valletta on the besieged island of Malta in the center and in Alexandria in Egypt in the east. After the German attack on the Soviet Union in the summer, the USSR allows the Royal Navy to use Soviet naval bases on the Barents Sea . The Arctic bases serve the British submarines as a springboard for operations against German shipping off Norway and to secure the Allied supply lines to the year-round ice-free port of Murmansk in northwestern Russia.

In the last year of the war, no more new units are launched. Seven units are put into service, one of which is given to the Dutch Navy. After the German surrender on May 8, the submarines are only used in combat in Asia. On May 19, the HMS Terrapin was so badly damaged by a Japanese escort vehicle that it was later written off as a total loss. The Terrapin is still the last British combat loss of a submarine. The Second World War ends on August 15 with a declaration of surrender by the Japanese Emperor Hirohito published on the radio . The Japanese surrender is officially signed on September 2nd. The first three units will be decommissioned and sold for scrapping by the end of the year.
During the war, 51 units were put into service, 16 of which were lost in combat operations.

After 1945
In 1946 the last two units are put into service. The remaining boats from the first and second construction lots and submarines that have not yet been completed will be scrapped by 1947. Until the 1950s, many of the boats in the third batch were converted based on the German submarine class XXI and, similar to the US Greater Underwater Propulsion Power Program, optimized for high underwater speeds and equipped with snorkels. The Royal Navy decommissioned its last T-class submarine in 1969.
In addition to the two units handed over to the Netherlands during the war, eight submarines are sold or rented to friendly nations. Between 1948 and 1953 the Dutch Navy leased two more submarines. The last Dutch submarine was taken out of service in 1964. The Royal Australian Navy took over three units in the 1960s, which they used until around 1968. The last foreign customer is the Israeli Navy . Israel buys three units in 1965, which are put into service in 1967 after renovation and modernization measures. A boat is already lost on the crossing to Israel. The last Israeli submarine of the class is the Dolphin (ex HMS Truncheon ), which was taken out of service in 1975 as the world's last T-class submarine.
