Joseph Haßreiter

Joseph Haßreiter (born December 30, 1845 in Mauer near Vienna; † February 8, 1940 in Vienna ; also Josef Hassreiter ) was an Austrian dancer , ballet master and choreographer .

Life

His father was a corp dancer at the Kärntnertortheater and ran a ballet school in Wieden . Joseph Haßreiter received his training in Vienna from 1851 under the solo dancer Gustave Carey (~ 1817–1881) and from the ballet master Giovanni Golinelli (1809–1884) in the ballet school of the Kärntnertortheater, in which performances of the kk court opera took place.

After engagements as first solo dancer at the Royal Court and National Theater in Munich (1864–1868) and then at the Royal Court Theater in Stuttgart , Haßreiter returned to Vienna in 1870 and became the first solo dancer of the Vienna Court Opera Ballet. In this capacity he was a member of the Court Opera for 20 years.

In addition, he ran his own dance institute and was dance master of the high aristocracy, where he a. a. Arranged the charity parties of Princess Pauline Metternich , at times he also worked as a court dance teacher.

On January 1, 1891, Haßreiter was given the post of court ballet master, not least because of his great success with the ballet Die Puppenfee (1888). As director of the ballet ensemble, he fundamentally renewed it and thus became the creator of the Viennese ballet. As director of the ballet dance school at the kk Hof-Operntheater , he also took care of the training of the next generation.

Haßreiter was also active as a director , ballet master and choreographer , often also on stages abroad, such as in Berlin or Milan. He wrote the choreography to 48 plants and 10 ballets the libretto, including the Puppenfee that with most listed Ballet in Germany. During Haßreiter's lifetime alone, this work had more than 600 performances in Vienna and it was performed on more than 500 stages around the world.

His final resting place is at the Penzinger Friedhof (south wall, crypt 18). In 1935, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, the Haßreitersteig in Vienna- Liesing was named after him.

In his choreographies, Haßreiter placed particular emphasis on the decorative use of stage and stage means and used the latest stage technology available at the time. In collaboration with the composers, he created rapid sequences of scenes in his ballets, in which a hierarchically ordered ensemble could impress in large-scale formations.
