History and commitment

Haithabu in the port of Hörnum on Sylt

The ship was built in 1982 by the Aluminum Yachtbau shipyard in Lübeck , has an aluminum catamaran hull and was specially designed for monitoring coastal waters in the North and Baltic Seas. It offers space for multi-day excursions for a total of five people, three crew members and two scientists. The ship can stay at sea for around 100 hours. Samples taken can already be biogeochemically examined in our own laboratory at sea .

In 2004 the ship was also equipped with a sea bed classification system, which allows the hardness and roughness of the sediment to be determined using backscattered signals from the sea floor .

In 2014 the ship was decommissioned and replaced by a successor of the same name . In 2015 it was offered for sale through VEBEG and shipped to Turkey in September.
