Halo 5: Guardians is a first-person shooter and the tenth game in the Halo game series . It was released worldwide on October 27, 2015 for Xbox One . Halo 5 is the second game in the Halo trilogy Reclaimer Trilogy . Like its predecessor, Halo 4 , it was developed by 343 Industries . The game story starts shortly after the events in Halo 4 . For the first time since Halo 2 , another main character named Agent Locke can be played alongside the Master Chief . The AI Cortana is also part of the game again.

Work on Halo 5 was announced at E3 2013. It was also mentioned that the trilogy should be expanded if necessary. The main author of the game is Brian Reed . Even before the game was released, it was possible to test a multiplayer pre-release version in the Halo - The Master Chief Collection .

action

When a new threat appears in the galaxy, the Master Chief disappears along with the Blue team, consisting of Fred , Kelly and Linda . Faced with the question of their loyalty, the UNSC sends the Spartan Jameson Locke and his team Osiris to locate them and solve the mysterious disappearance before the solar system is overrun by the Alliance and the Promethans.

background

For the first time in game history, you constantly fight as a team and can also give commands to it, although some borrowings (including the resuscitation system and focus on a target ) have also been taken over from the video game Star Wars: Republic Commando .

Innovations

Some innovations are a new aiming system that now allows the player to aim at the weapon like in many modern shooter games. In general, the game has been made more dynamic; there are, for example, new functions in close combat, including: "Spartan rush" (you run over your opponent), "Bodenstampfer" (attack takes place from above by rushing at the enemy) and "assassination attack": the camera changes to the third person and an attack from behind on his opponent is shown. These melee attacks are animated in the third person and briefly replace the first person perspective.

War zone

The " Warzone " mode has now been introduced in multiplayer . Up to 24 players fight each other in two teams, but also with AI opponents who are controlled by the game and thus represent a third party. In this mode, every player can equip himself as he likes, provided he has the means, because weapons / equipment / vehicles are drawn in packages (bronze / silver / gold). The associated points (Req Points) for redeeming are earned by completing games. A bronze package costs 1250, a silver package 5000 and a gold package 10,000. On average, the player receives 1800 Req Points per game. In addition, the player is offered to buy silver and gold packages with real money.

Several weapons and different variants of these weapons are available, drawn like trading cards. Some are permanently available, others only once. In addition, the developer introduced many weapons from previous parts through updates. Thus, for example, there is the Combat Evolved pistol from Halo 1 and the combat rifle and the hammer of Tartarus from Halo 2.

A modified variant of war zone is "war zone firefight", in which eight players only fight against AI opponents and have to survive five rounds of increasing difficulty.

reception

Halo 5 received consistently good reviews. For example, the GamePro rates the game with 91% and said in its conclusion: Halo 5 is a first-class sci-fi shooter with a great campaign and varied multiplayer modes.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack of the same name for the game was composed by Kazuma Jinnouchi . It was released at the beginning of November 2015 and was manufactured by 343 Industries and distributed by Rough Trade . Even before it was released, the entire soundtrack could be listened to for free on SoundCloud for a while .

Radio play series

Even before the game was released, a radio play series entitled Hunt the Truth was published in English in March 2015 . This is spoken by Keegan-Michael Key , who plays a fictional journalist named Benjamin Giraud .

Editions

The game is offered in different editions. In addition to the normal edition, there was also a limited edition with exclusive content, an Xbox One version in the Spartan Locke look and two different wireless controllers. A Collectors Edition was also released , which offers the same advantages as the "Limited Edition", but also contains a figure of "Spartan Locke" and the "Master Chief".

filming

In May 2013, 343 Industries announced that a live-action television series based on Halo with Steven Spielberg as executive producer was in the works; Neill Blomkamp will direct. The series was due to premiere on Showtime in Fall 2015 , just in time for the release of Halo 5: Guardians . In August 2015, however, the publication was postponed to unknown.

An animated film entitled Halo: The Fall of Reach was released on DVD and Blu-Ray in December 2015. Based on the novel Halo: The Battle for Reach by Eric Nylund, the film is a prequel and tells the life of the Master Chief before the events before Halo: Battle for the Future .
