The 3rd African men's
handball championship was held between July 20 and 31, 1979 in the Congolese capital Brazzaville by the Confédération Africaine de Handball (CAHB). Eight teams qualified for the finals. Tunisia also won the tournament after 1974 and 1976; Egypt and third placed Algeria also took the medal ranks . Fourth was the host's team, the People's Republic of the Congo , ahead of Cameroon in fifth and Togo in sixth. It was followed by Ivory Coast and Nigeria in 7th and 8th place.

With the success Tunisia qualified for the Olympic handball tournament in Moscow in 1980 ; However, since the country boycotted the games alongside 63 other nations, Algeria entered the tournament as a representative of Africa.
