The 4th African men's handball championship was organized between July 17 and 31, 1981 in the Tunisian capital Tunis by the Confédération Africaine de Handball (CAHB). Eight teams qualified for the finals. Algeria won the tournament ahead of Ivory Coast and third-placed hosts and defending champions Tunisia . The team from Egypt came fourth , followed by Angola in fifth and Nigeria in sixth. It was followed by the People's Republic of the Congo andGuinea in 7th and 8th place.

With the success, Algeria qualified for the 10th handball world championship in 1982 in the Federal Republic of Germany .
