The 6th African men's handball championship was organized in 1985 in the Angolan capital Luanda by the Confédération Africaine de Handball (CAHB). Six teams were qualified for the finals. Defending champion Algeria won the tournament before selecting Tunisia and the third-placed People's Republic of the Congo . The Egyptians finished fourth , ahead of hosts Angola in fifth and Ivory Coast in sixth.

With the success, Algeria qualified for the 11th Handball World Cup 1986 in Switzerland ; Tunisia received a starting place at the handball B World Cup in 1987 in Italy .
