The 5th African men's handball championship was organized in 1983 in the Egyptian capital Cairo by the Confédération Africaine de Handball (CAHB). Six teams were qualified for the finals. Defending champion Algeria won the tournament ahead of the selection of the People's Republic of the Congo and third-placed Tunisia . The hosts Egypt's team finished fourth , ahead of Angola in fifth and Ivory Coast in sixth.

With success, Algeria qualified for the 1984 Olympic handball tournament in Los Angeles ; the People's Republic of the Congo received a starting place at the handball B World Cup in 1985 in Norway .
