Geographical location

Handthal is located in the far east of the Oberschwarzach municipality. To the north rises with the Stollburg and the mountain of the same name, the community-free area Stollbergerforst in the district of Schweinfurt. In the east, the district of Bamberg in Upper Franconia begins with the municipality of Ebrach . To the south is the smallest community-free area in the district of Schweinfurt, the Geiersberg . history

The history of Handthal is closely linked to the Stollburg in the immediate vicinity. Handthal originally consisted of several small towns called Winkel, Bramberg and Babental. After the merger, the settlement was called "Hantal", the name refers to a 'valley on the Hagen', to a pig for the acorn fattening in the nearby forests.

For a long time, Handthal was an independent municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Gerolzhofen . On May 1, 1978 it became a part of the market town of Oberschwarzach in the Schweinfurt district.

Architectural monuments

Magdalenenkirche

The center of the settlement is the Catholic branch church of St. Maria Magdalena. Originally it stood on the height of the Madgalenenberg and was the destination of many pilgrims . It was consecrated in 1729. In 1810 the Handthalern was given permission to rebuild the disbanded hospice church and the Magdalenenkirche was rebuilt in the village. There is a six-sided roof turret above the choir .

Inside, the baroque splendor of the old church still predominates . The high altar from 1720 was decorated with four columns and with the sermon of St. John. The side altars are from the Rococo and were created in 1780. A Pietà dates from around 1480. The rococo crucifixion group on the right wall of the nave is much younger . The organ from around 1700 was moved to the church after the Oberzell monastery was dissolved .

The wayside shrines in the hallways around Handthal are typical of the Catholic village . The oldest torture dates from 1709. Her essay bears a relief of the crucifixion , two side figures of Saint Dorothea and the Banthaleon border the stick. In 1867 the sandstone cross was erected on the Magdalenenberg, it refers to the former hospice of the Franciscans.

Stollburg

Handthal's landmark is the Stollberg with a wine bar named after the nearby Stollburg, with a wide view of southern Lower Franconia .

Chapel ranks

The Magdalenenkirche originally stood on the chapel level, above the chapel in the northeast of the village. A legend is about the founding of the monastery. A damsel from the Stollburg had got lost and swore to build a chapel on the spot where she saw her home again. Once on the mountain, she could see the castle again. She kept her promise and had a small church built on the mountain, which was soon looked after by hermits .

In 1747 some Franciscans from the monastery in Dettelbach settled the mountain and set up a hospice with nine cells there. In a short time, a local pilgrimage to the mountain was made, but it died out again at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1803 the monastery was closed in the course of secularization . The inventory was sold to the hospital church in Schweinfurt through auction . After the church itself was moved to Handthal, the so-called Magdalenenkreuz was erected there in 1867.
