Hanna Beate Schöpp-Schilling (born August 19, 1940 as Hanna Beate Schilling in Wohltorf ; † July 20, 2009 in Berlin ) was a German Americanist and feminist who made outstanding contributions to the promotion and realization of women's rights on a national and international level .

Live and act

Hanna Beate Schilling studied English , German and American studies at the universities of Munich , FU Berlin and Yale . It was 1970 at the Free University of Berlin with a thesis entitled The importance of the brothers Schlegel for the American Literary Criticism, 1815-1833 to Dr. phil. PhD.

She then worked as a research assistant and from 1972 to 1976 as an assistant professor of American literature at the John F. Kennedy Institute . It was here that she introduced “ Women's Studies ” seminars for the first time and, together with other young women academics, organized the first summer university for women in what was then the Federal Republic at the Free University of Berlin in 1976.

From 1977 to 1987 she worked at the Aspen Institute Berlin in various functions, including assistant director and managing director. She was one of the West Berlin scientists who initiated the establishment of a women's research institute at the Free University of Berlin, which was anchored in 1981 as a central institution for the promotion of women's and gender research. From 1982 to 1984 she was co-editor of the series “Results of Women's Research”, in which the dissertations of young women scientists were published.

For five years she headed the women's policy department newly founded by the then Minister Rita Süssmuth in the Federal Ministry for Youth, Family, Women and Health (today: Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth ) with the rank of ministerial director .

In 1989 she was proposed by the then Federal Government of the States Parties to the United Nations as experts in the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women elected (CEDAW), to which she belonged by 2008. She played a decisive role in shaping the work of the committee and made a significant contribution to the recognition of international women's rights as inviolable and inalienable human rights . In 2007 she documented the committee's activities in the volume The Circle of Empowerment , which she edited with Cees Flinterman , the Dutch member of the committee. The volume sheds light on the background to the actual work of the treaty body, which otherwise remains closed. In an essay, Hanna Beate Schöpp-Schilling works out the special features of the CEDAW in comparison to other human rights instruments. In her review, Sarah Wittkopp draws the conclusion: “The anthology strikes a balance between legal information and personal reflection. […] The fight against discrimination against women is illustrated using the example of the committee's growing acceptance and self-confidence. A colorful carpet of convention and its history is woven from the many personal memories. "

In addition, Hanna Beate Schöpp-Schilling took on numerous teaching positions in the field of human rights of women, including at the Ruhr University Bochum , at the universities of Yekaterinburg (Russia) and Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and as a visiting professor at the Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto ( Japan).

Hanna Beate Schöpp-Schilling was awarded the Margherita von Brentano Prize in 2008 for her life's work and in particular for her 20 years of commitment to the implementation and implementation of women's and human rights and in 2009 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .

“I am a feminist. And feminism just means recognizing that the prevailing conditions are determined by patriarchal structures. "
