Hanns Eckelkamp

Hanns Eckelkamp (born February 28, 1927 in Münster , † August 5, 2021 in Berlin ) was a German film salesman, cinema chain owner, distribution rights dealer, co-producer and film producer .

Life

In 1945 Eckelkamp graduated from high school Paulinum in Münster. In 1946 he opened the first cinema in his parents' pub, the Gertrudenhof. From 1948 to 1955 he took over other cinemas in Duisburg and Münster, including the European Palace in Duisburg.

From 1963, for the first time with The Endless Night , he took part in the production of films. Soon afterwards, in 1965, he founded the Atlas International company under the Atlas Group. After the bankruptcy in 1966, the company was split up into Eckelkamp Filmverleih, Atlas Schmalfilm, Atlas Filmkunst and Atlas International. With the company Atlas Maritim in 1976 he built up the supply of films for German merchant ships. With Atlas Air GmbH he supplied Lufthansa with films from 1980 . In 1996 he handed the company over to Kinowelt .

Eckelkamp was married and had six children. From 2000 he was a member of the German Film Academy and from 2006 a member of the European Film Academy . He lived in Berlin, where he died in August 2021 at the age of 94.
