Life

Hans Brög spent his youth in Ludwigsstadt and attended the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium Schweinfurt . From 1957 to 1968 he studied philosophy, art history and geography at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and at the Technical University of Stuttgart, as well as philosophy and art history at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and sculpture with Henri-Georges Adam at the École nationale supérieure des beaux -arts de Paris and in the Atelier Johnny Friedlaender in Paris.

He received his doctorate from the philosopher Max Bense . In 1972 he was appointed full professor in Cologne and in 1978 at the University of Duisburg to the chair for art and didactics of art; he retired in 2001. Since 1981 he has been a member of the Board of Trustees of Duisburger Kunstbesitz and Vice President of the Association for Scientific Semiotics , and since 1999 a member of the Buchheim Foundation's board of trustees. He was co-editor of Semiosis , the journal for scientific semiotics and the journal for art education .

In addition to art studies, Brög's scientific fields of work also include philosophy (aesthetics, semiotics) and the history of early plastics. He “worked with materials, plastics like foam rubber, synthetic resin, etc. He is an artist who not only takes pictures, but also creates texts that stand for themselves or are integrated into pictures. The linearity of the text is absorbed by the flatness of the image […] ”. On the background of material and process, Brög's artistic work ranges “from nude painting to the media-aesthetic transformation of natural, drawn, painted, photographed objects, e. B. in printmaking, from the use of an artistic world of second-hand images as semi-finished products to manipulative, technical-artistic processes ”. He introduced the process of thermogravure: since 1958 he has been making attempts with polystyrene plates of a suitable degree of hardness and elasticity in order to achieve a completely new surface character that has never before been achieved in etching. The primary tool is no longer the embroidering needle, but the soldering iron , with which the material is locally heated, this creates lines, structures, surfaces, traces, as the heated and thus softened material is displaced. here ridges rise up, walls are thrown up, but these ridges and walls are now, in contrast to drypoint etching, very variable in height and width, no longer necessarily sharp-edged.
