The Kunstverein Aalen eV was founded in 1983 to promote the fine arts and is a member of the German Art Association (ADKV). The association, which has around 470 members, is based in the old town hall in Aalen ( Baden-Württemberg ) and is mainly dedicated to promoting contemporary art .

history

The art association was founded on March 7, 1983 and entered into the official register of associations on March 29, 1983. It is recognized by the tax authorities as non-profit. At the first general meeting on May 1, 1983, the association already had 81 members.

In the first 11 years of the association's history - due to the lack of gallery space - most of the exhibitions were presented in the foyer of the Aalen town hall, but also in other public institutions in the city. On September 9, 1994, Lord Mayor Ulrich Pfeifle was able to hand over the keys to the gallery in the Old Town Hall to the first chairman of the Aalen Art Association, Artur Elmer , on the occasion of an exhibition opening. This gave the art association in the middle of the city of Aalen, on the market square, suitable rooms for its activities. In 2017 the exhibition space of the Kunstverein was expanded to a total of three floors.

On the occasion of the exhibition Lehrer Rembrandt, Lehrer Sumowski , the Kunstverein showed in October 2019 the painting Pallas Athene , long believed to be lost and identified by the Stuttgart art historian Werner Sumowski as a work by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn , for which the authoritative Rembrandt Research Project in Amsterdam did not assign it there for the first time to the public.

The Kunstverein Aalen is an exhibition center for contemporary painting , graphics , photography , video art , installation and architecture . The association is in regular, close contact with important local and international artists and art collectors. This enables the selection and compilation of exhibition presentations on regionally and internationally known artists, who often attract a nationwide audience. Artur Elmer's longstanding contact with Lothar-Günther Buchheim deserves a special mention here .

A thematic focus of the art association is the presentation and communication of art from non-European cultures. This includes in particular the exhibition of works by African artists as well as traditional and modern art from the Indian cultural area .

The Kunstverein Aalen repeatedly shows art from private collections in its exhibitions . In this way, works of art that are otherwise not on view to the public are also accessible to a wider audience. In many cases, these private collections contain works of art from different cultures and very different ages. Since the art experience was often in the foreground for the collector and less the comprehensive art-historical or ethnological systematics, the public work exhibitions should enable a deeper analysis of the works through dialogue with the audience.

In the exhibition series Art from Us , members of the association usually present their works in Aalen at the beginning of each year. In addition, the art market takes place annually in the premises of the art association , with the focus on the purchase of works by members.

One of the main goals of the Aalen Art Association is to convey knowledge and suggestions to its members and the public. This takes place with the help of guided tours through the exhibitions of the association with vernissages and finissages, lectures and discussions on topics of art, as well as regular art trips to important museums and events in Germany and abroad. In addition, a library with several thousand books enables in-depth examination of all epochs and styles of the visual arts.

The association sees a further important task in supporting the cultural status and the development of the city of Aalen and the region. In this context, on the one hand, the establishment of a municipal gallery is sought, and on the other hand, cooperation is maintained with the neighboring art associations in Ellwangen , Heidenheim an der Brenz , Schwäbisch Gmünd , Langenburg and Ulm .
