Hans Heinrich IX. Baron von Reinach (born August 22, 1589 , † August 4, 1645 in Regensburg ) was the Imperial Feldzeugmeister , commander of the Breisach Fortress and governor of Regensburg.

Career

Born as the son of Theobald I , who has been the Austrian Obervogt zu Altkirch in Alsace since 1590 , Hans Heinrich von Reinach embarked on a military career. In 1626 he became a colonel of the previous Schmidt regiment under Pappenheim , when he took part in the conquest of the city of Ratzeburg in 1630 . The Pappenheimers also played a key role in the destruction of Magdeburg in 1631. Then Tilly von Reinach sends against the Lutheran Bremen Bishop Johann Friedrich von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf to force him to resign. As commander of the city of Stade , von Reinach succeeded in enforcing imperial power in the area between the Elbe and Weser. In 1632 he again joined the Pappenheimers to relieve the city of Maastricht, which was besieged by Friedrich Heinrich von Orange . The assault on the camp of the well-entrenched Dutch on August 17, 1632 fails, however.

Von Reinach also belongs to the Pappenheimers in the battle of Lützen , but while von Pappenheim and his cavalry can intervene decisively in the battle, von Reinach and the foot soldiers arrive too late. After the battle, Wallenstein orders him to cover the retreat of the imperial troops.

In 1634 von Reinach returned to his Alsatian homeland to recruit troops with whom he successfully took part in the Battle of Nördlingen on September 5th , in which the Swedes suffer a crushing defeat. As an award for his services, Archduchess Claudia von Medici , the regent of Tyrol and Upper Austria, appointed him in command of the Breisach Fortress. But this post is too boring for the warrior and so he conquered the stronghold near Emmendingen, which had been in Swedish possession since 1633, in the course of the withdrawal of the Swedes .

At the beginning of August 1638 Reinach came to the test when Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar besieged Breisach. Bernard, Prince of Richelieu's grace, had initially taken the forest towns of Waldshut , Säckingen , Laufenburg, Rheinfelden and finally Freiburg in quick succession . Now he is standing in front of the imperial fortress with the young French General Turenne and his Armée de l'Allemagne. Right at the start of the siege, a powder magazine that cannot be replaced explodes in the city. In addition, food is slowly running out in the besieged fortress. At the end of October 14,000 imperial men under Johann von Götzen tried to relieve Breisach. They manage to take a bridge over the Rhine, but the French-Swedish besiegers - like the besieged hungry and weakened - repel the imperial attackers on October 14, 1638. On October 28th, Breisach's last outer works fell . The explosion of a second powder magazine on December 3rd opened a breach for the besiegers . A last attempt at liberation from Götzen, reinforced by fresh troops under Philipp von Mansfeld , also fails. Finally, after 8 months of siege, the imperial fortress surrenders on December 17, 1638. Only 150 of the approximately 4,000 inhabitants of Breisach survived hunger and plague. Von Reinach was allowed to withdraw to Strasbourg with the soldiers he had left, that is, with flying flags and two cannons.

After this defeat, von Reinach became governor of Regensburg, where he died on August 4, 1645.
