Hans Jakob Zörnlin
Hans Jakob Zörnlin (born October 22, 1588 in Basel , † September 7, 1659 in Liestal ) was a Swiss officer in foreign services and civil servant.
Life
Hans Jakob Zörnlin was the son of Veit Zörnlin (* July 1557; † 17 May 1627 in Basel), cathedral clerk and his wife Magdalena (* 1560 in Basel; † after 1604), daughter of Johannes Spyrer (1519–1567), hat maker and cathedral provost- conductors , born. His siblings were:
- Emanuel Zörnlin (* 1586 in Basel † 1626), married to Veronika Kunzmann (* 1596; † after 1626);
- Judith Zörnlin (* 1597 in Basel; † 1667), married to Emanuel Stupanus (1587 in Basel; † 1664), professor of medicine.
Hans Jakob Zörnlin trained as a silk trader in Basel and Nuremberg and visited various Mediterranean countries and Germany from 1607 to 1610 .
In 1612 he became a shopkeeper in Basel and in 1616 signed up as a captain in the Swiss troops in Venetian service under Peter Melander von Holzappel . From 1623 to 1625 he was city governor of St. Gallen and then returned to the Venetian service. In 1630 he became lieutenant colonel in Basel and from 1631 to 1635 he was bailiff of Homburg and then from 1635 to 1648 of Waldenburg , where he became colonel of the federal artillery in 1647 due to the defensionality of Wil . From 1650 to 1653 he was the guild master of the key guild in Basel . In 1653 he was in command of the Basel authorities in the Peasants' War .
From 1654 to 1656 he was federal bailiff in Lugano and then councilor in Basel. In 1658 he became mayor of Liestal, where he died of syphilis a year later . Zörnlin was an authority on military matters throughout the Confederation.
Since 1611, Hans Jakob was first married to Maria (* 1590; † January 13, 1621 in Basel), daughter of Hieronymus Burckhardt (* 1547 in Basel; † 1619), conductor of the Teutonic Knights Order (he administered the secular goods after the Reformation of the order on behalf of the city of Basel) and Oberstmeister in the Gesellschaft zum Rebhaus . They had two children together:
- Anna Zörnlin (* 1613 in Basel; † 1634), married to Johannes Schwarz (* 1606 in Basel; † after 1643), model writer (kept the list of troops);
- Christoph Zörnlin (* 1615 in Basel; † unknown).
In 1623 he was married to Judith, daughter of Hans Christoph Gmünder, a merchant in St. Gallen. The names of the children are known:
- Elisabeth Zörnlin, married to Christoph Scherer.
