Hans Kloss (born July 12, 1938 in Ohlau , Silesia ; † September 12, 2018 ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

After fleeing to Schwäbisch Gmünd ( Baden-Württemberg ) in 1953 , he completed an apprenticeship as a ceramic painter and then studied at the technical college for design. He then worked as a painter and gallery owner in Schwäbisch Gmünd and was chairman of the Gmünder Kunstverein . In 1969 he moved to the neighboring town of Lorch . His former wife Maria Kloss is also a painter .

Since the late 1970s, Kloss had been a member of the SPD parliamentary group in Lorch's municipal council, and most recently a member of the administrative and finance committee. Kloss resigned as a councilor in October 2009, according to his own information out of disappointment.

Kloss also worked as a graphic artist. From 1968 to 1983 he drew eight pages of comics with the Smurfs week after week, and in 1985 he designed special postage stamps for Paraguay . In addition to many other graphics, he designed advertising posters in the style of graphic designer Heinz Edelmann for the Bifora watch factory on the occasion of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona .

Hans Kloss died at the age of eighty. His grave is on the Leonhard Cemetery in Schwäbisch Gmünd in grave field C.

Works

Kloss' best-known work of art is the Staufer round picture , completed in 2002 , a 30-meter-long and 4.5-meter-high panorama picture in the Lorch Monastery , which tells the story of the German and European rulers of the Staufer family in the 12th and 13th centuries.

In 2004 his monumental advice altar was presented in Schwäbisch Gmünd, which the Würth Collection bought.

Since summer 2012, Kloss has been working on his second round picture, the 40 square meter Staufersaga panorama , which he completed in October 2015. It has been on view in the Schwäbisch Gmünd Panorama Museum since 2016 .

In April 2016, Kloss painted the west facade of the newly built Ascension Chapel in Herdtlinsweiler, a suburb of Weiler in the mountains .
