Hans Lamprecht

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Emil Lamprecht (born June 26, 1919 in Zurich ; † March 31, 2012 ) was a Swiss - German forest scientist .

The internationally recognized expert on tropical forests and tropical silviculture taught and researched from 1952 to 1966 at the Forestry Faculty of the Andean University in Mérida and from 1966 to 1984 headed the department of tropical silviculture and natural forest research at the Georg-August University in Göttingen .

Life

Origin and education

Born as the son of Hans Lamprecht and his wife Anna nee Weber, Hans Lamprecht grew up in several Swiss towns. He attended primary and secondary school in Dietikon , then the humanistic grammar schools in Altdorf and Disentis . In Disentis he also passed his school leaving examination in 1940 and in the same year began studying forestry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich , which he graduated in 1944 as a qualified forest engineer. This was followed by forestry practice at the St. Gallen City Forestry Office and the Visp District Forestry Office , after which Hans Lamprecht received the federal eligibility certificate in spring 1946. Since early 1946, he served as assistant to Hans Leibundgut worked at the Institute of Silviculture at the ETH Zurich and conducted research at the same time for his dissertation About the influence of environmental factors on Frostrißbildung with stalk and sessile oak in the northeast central Switzerland , with whom he 1951 Leibundgut at ETH to Dr.-Ing. forest. received his doctorate .

As a professor in Venezuela and Germany

Hans Lamprecht did extensive research on the forests around Mérida

In 1952 Lamprecht went to Venezuela to teach and research at the Forestry Faculty of the Andean University (Universidad de Los Andes, or ULA) in Mérida as a professor of silviculture. In 1965 he took a call to the then still in Hann. Munden be moved Forestry Faculty of the Georg-August-University of Goettingen in. As the successor to Friedrich-Karl Hartmann , he became full professor and director of the Institute for Silviculture Basics there in March 1966 . On the initiative of Alfred Bonnemann and Hans Lamprecht, the faculty's two silviculture institutes were soon merged, with Lamprecht taking on the chair of natural forest research and silviculture of the tropics and subtropics as head of department II. He then rebuilt these two subject areas - especially after the faculty moved to Göttingen - and continued to develop them until he retired in 1984.

In his retirement, Lamprecht finally moved to Holzmaden . He died on March 31, 2012 at the age of 92.

Services

Lamprecht is responsible for the fact that several federal states have designated natural forest reserves - as here in Herrenholz in Lower Saxony

Hans Lamprecht worked on a very broad spectrum in teaching and research. While in his years in Venezuela the main objective was to find ways to sustainable forestry use of tropical forests through silviculture , in his time in Göttingen he also covered the basics of silviculture and the vegetation of temperate latitudes. One of his priorities in this context was natural forest research. One of his pioneering achievements is that in several German federal states in the most important forest communities natural forest reserves have been designated in a comparable manner . In these areas, the forest is left to its own devices, with natural processes being scientifically researched. Because of the long development periods in forest ecosystems, long-term research projects are required. It was clear to Lamprecht that only later generations of researchers would be able to reap the fruits of these investigations.

However, his work on tropical forests and tropical silviculture made him internationally known since the 1950s. Hans Lamprecht always advocated near-natural silviculture, but also saw the need for afforestation and wood-growing plantations in order to be able to meet the constantly increasing demand for raw materials worldwide. He undertook numerous research trips into the forests of the tropical zone - in addition to South America also in Africa and Southeast Asia - and kept in constant contact with the regions concerned even after his return to Europe. Lamprecht supervised - often in close cooperation with the German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) - a multitude of different tropical forest projects and numerous dissertations on this topic. He also advised countless young people from Germany and Latin American countries on their careers.

The fact that he built up and further developed the teaching and research area “Silviculture of the Tropics and Subtropics” at the University of Göttingen contributed significantly to the international reputation of the Forestry Faculty. The fact that the University of Göttingen had both an agricultural and a forestry faculty with a strong commitment in the tropics and subtropics also helped here, which is unique in Germany. Together they founded the Research and Study Center for Agricultural and Forest Sciences of the Tropics and Subtropics (Tropical Center), of which Lamprecht was managing director for many years. He found a congenial colleague in the agricultural scientist Wolfram Achtnich . Together with him he was editor of the series of publications Göttingen Contributions to Agriculture and Forestry in the Tropics and Subtropics for several years . Even after his retirement, Lamprecht and Achtnich remained one of the central personalities of the Tropical Center and participated in several international symposia .

Hans Lamprecht has published a total of more than 90 articles in national and international journals. He incorporated his decades of experience into the book Silviculture in the Tropics (1986), which received worldwide attention. The German Society for Technical Cooperation arranged for translations into English , Spanish and Portuguese , which appeared in 1989 and 1990.

Awards

Hans Lamprecht's services to forestry and forest science in tropical regions were recognized in 1984 with the Bernhard Eduard Fernow plaque , jointly awarded by the German Forestry Association and the American Forestry Association . In 1990 Lamprecht was the first recipient of the newly established Georg Ludwig Hartig Prize from the Georg Ludwig Hartig Foundation . In doing so, the foundation honored his international research achievements as well as his work as a lecturer for forest management principles in temperate latitudes and his research on natural forests.
