Hanns Lautensack was a son of Paul Lautensack . Like his brother Heinrich , Hanns received his training from a goldsmith. Although he called himself “Pictor”, no paintings by him are known. His early works are based on the graphics of the Nuremberg " Kleinmeister ". Later on, landscape elements are consciously incorporated into the portraits. Lautensack received the essential suggestions for pure landscape representations from Albrecht Altdorfer and Wolf Huber . In 1552 he provided topographically accurate location surveys of Nuremberg and 1554 of Steyr . In 1554 Lautensack moved to Vienna . Here he made portraits of Archduke Karl of Styria, Archduke Maximilian of Austria and King Ferdinand I as well as important cityscapes that were influenced by the Danube School in their early work . Lautensack now included biblical representations in his landscapes.

The graphic work is kept in the collections of Berlin, Munich, Nuremberg, Braunschweig and Vienna. Lautensack's engravings and etchings can be found in the Albertina . The British Museum also has an extensive collection of Lautensack's works .
