Hans von Staff

Karl Ferdinand Hans Hartwig von Staff, called von Reitzenstein (born October 10, 1883 in Görlitz , † June 8, 1915 in Grootfontein , Namibia ) was a German geologist.

Life

Hans von Staff was born as the son of the district court president Adolph von Staff gen. Von Reitzenstein and his wife Anna Maria Elisabeth, nee. Mathesius born.

He first attended the grammar school in Breslau St. Maria Magdalena and then in Poznan . He received his Abitur in Hirschberg at Easter 1902. He first studied law in Heidelberg. Afterwards he stayed for one semester each at the universities in Wroclaw, Lausanne and Wroclaw again. He is also said to have been in Mexico for a certain time .

At Easter 1904 he enrolled in the philosophical faculty. A passion for mountaineering had sparked his interest in geology . He had already listened to philosophical lectures while studying law.

At the age of 23 on July 21, 1906, he published his dissertation in Breslau on the subject of contributions to the stratigraphy and tectonics of the Gerecse Mountains . After staying in Breslau, he went to Berlin and in 1909 became a lecturer in geology and palaeontology at the Friedrichs-Wilhelm University , where he mainly analyzed marine fossils.

Until July 1909 he was still the second assistant at the Museum für Naturkunde . At the age of 28, Hans von Staff joined the Tendaguru expedition .

During the First World War von Staff was apparently a government official and held the position of imperial geologist for German South West Africa . As head of the drilling column south, he was given the task of obtaining water. On July 8, 1915, Hans v. Staff as a result of typhoid in the hospital in Grootfontein (Namibia).

On March 21, 1908, Hans von Staff married the dentist Henriette Olga Emmy Helene, called Hella, Dercks, the daughter of the royal church music director Emil Dercks . She was the granddaughter of the head of the city council and the chancellery in Kreuzburg (Upper Silesia) Franz Welczek . The couple divorced on April 9, 1914.
