Hapoel Ironi Kirjat Schmona ( Hebrew מועדון כדורגל הפועל עירוני קרית שמונה Moadon Kaduregel Hapoel Ironi Kirjat Shmona ) is an Israeli football club in Kirjat Schmona .

history

The club was created in 2000 from the merger of the clubs Hapoel Kirjat Schmona and Maccabi Kirjat Schmona, which both played in lower-class leagues at the time. In 2007 he was promoted to the Ligat ha'Al . This was the first time that a football team from the northern Israeli city was represented in the highest Israeli league. With a third place they qualified for the 2008 UEFA Cup qualification. After a success over FK Mogren , Hapoel failed in the second round to Litex Lovetsch . In 2009, the club was relegated, but a year later succeeded in the immediate rise as first place in the Liga Leumit . In 2012 Kirjat Schmona secured four game days before the end of the season for the first time in the club's history to win the Israeli championship.

In the Champions League qualification for the 2012/13 season, Hapoel prevailed against MŠK Žilina (0: 1, 2: 0) and Neftçi Baku (4: 0, 2: 2). In the decisive playoff for qualifying for the group phase, Hapoel failed against the Belarusian champions and two-time CL participant BATE Baryssau with 0: 2 in the first leg and 1: 1 in the second leg. However, due to the last CL qualifying round reached, Hapoel automatically qualified for the Europa League . There they were drawn into a group with Olympique Lyon , Sparta Prague and Athletic Bilbao , in which they were the last to be eliminated with only two points and without a win. In the league they only reached 5th place, which meant that they missed a return to the European Cup.
