Harald Otto Julius Friedrich (born April 14, 1858 in Dresden ; † April 5, 1933 in Florence ) was a German painter and the grandson and last direct male descendant of Caspar David Friedrich .

Life

Harald Friedrich: (Gustav) Adolf Friedrich , 1879

Harald Friedrich was born as the only son of Adolf Friedrich and Caroline Lehmann (1828–1914). He is the last male descendant of Caspar David Friedrich. The parents encouraged their son's artistic talent and took him on numerous trips through Europe. He received his training as a painter during his studies at the Dresden Art Academy from 1876 to 1880. His teachers in portrait and history painting were Ferdinand Pauwels and Leon Pohle . A well-known portrait of his father was created in 1879 while still a student. As a student he sold pictures to private individuals and to the Saxon Art Association . Friedrich participated in the academic exhibitions with his work from 1877 to 1894. After studying in Munich and Venice , he worked in Anton von Werner's master workshop in Berlin in the early 1880s . In 1886 the painter got a teaching position at the Technical University of Hanover and from 1895 a full professorship for freehand drawing, figure drawing and life drawing for mechanical engineers and electrical engineers.

In the studio of Frederick his student learned from 1895 Carl Wiederhold .

Friedrich married Elisabeth Veronelli in 1897. Annaliese Friedrich was born in the marriage. The family traveled to the Swiss resort of Vevey every year .

In the tradition of the family, Harald Friedrich devotes himself to landscape painting and also deals with the motifs of his famous grandfather, as shown in the painting View of Berchtesgaden with a view of the Watzmann in the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald . In addition, still lifes and interiors were created. He was committed to the realism of his time. Friedrich's oeuvre includes several hundred oil paintings and watercolors, which are present in museums, in private collections and in the art trade.

Art history

Harald Friedrich owned part of the estate of his grandfather Caspar David Friedrich, which he mainly sold to the Kunsthalle Mannheim and the Kunsthalle Hamburg .
