education and profession

Harald Himmer attended elementary school and AHS (Realgymnasium) in Vienna , where he graduated in 1983 . He then began studying business administration at the Vienna University of Economics , which he completed in 1989 with a Magisterium (Mag. Rer. Soc. Oec.).

politics

Harald Himmer began his political career with the Junge ÖVP (JVP) and became federal chairman of this organization in 1990. He held this office until 1993.

"Torment bigwigs, choose Himmer"

During his time as JVP chairman, the National Council election campaign in 1990 fell. Like most of the younger candidates, the then 26-year-old was placed on a rather hopeless list. However, he tried to collect preferential votes in the election campaign and competed with stickers with the inscription "Tormenting bigwigs - choose Himmer". Under the title “Bigwigs, do you want to eat forever? Harry Himmers Diet Suggestions Against Political Slavery ”he invited to a press conference. His demands were a restriction of parliamentary activity to two terms of office in a row and a right to vote. Harald Himmer did not get the necessary number of preferential votes through his campaign to be able to move into the National Council. From this time there are still internal party opponents who still resent his choice of words in the National Council election campaign.

Federal Council mandate

Since 1995 he has been chairman of the district party organization of the ÖVP in Vienna- Landstrasse . The Vienna Landtag sent him to the Federal Council for the first time in the same year . On June 26, 1995 he was sworn in as the successor to Erich Putz . In the first half of 2004 he was Vice President of the Federal Council, also in the second half of 2008 and from May 1, 2009.

From 2000 to 2008 he was a member of the Austrian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe . After Johannes Hahn was nominated EU Commissioner, Himmer applied for his successor as regional chairman of the ÖVP in Vienna.

Since the ÖVP lost its right to a seat in the Federal Council in the state and municipal council elections in Vienna in 2015 , Harald Himmer left it on November 23, 2015.

Tetron affair

The Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating Himmer on suspicion of bribe payments. As the head of Alcatel-Lucent, he is said to have paid three million euros to the ÖVP via Alfons Mensdorff-Pouilly and the Federation of Industrialists in order to receive an order from the Interior Ministry, led by Ernst Strasser (ÖVP), to introduce a new radio system for authorities and emergency services .

In February 2012 the parliamentary immunity committee recommended lifting Himmer's immunity at the request of the public prosecutor's office in order to allow further investigation.
