The western part of the fjord facing the Atlantic is called Bømlafjord . Some larger islands such as Stord , Bømlo and Tysnesøy are in this part. The fjord runs roughly from southwest to northeast. There are two larger islands in the fjord, Halsnøy and Varaldsøy ; there are also several smaller islands such as Kvamsøy . The deepest part of the fjord is 893 meters deep and is located at the level of the village of Norheimsund - about halfway down the fjord from the sea to the interior. Inland, the Hardangerfjord is further divided into the smaller fjords Eidfjord and Sørfjord . Another fjord arm is Fyksesund , which leads to the north .

The region around the Hardangerfjord is also known as Hardanger . Municipalities along the Hardangerfjord are Bømlo , Stord , Kvam , Voss and Ulvik on the north side and Eidfjord , Ullensvang , Kvinnherad and Sveio on the south side .
