Hasan Kemal Özdemir (born February 9, 1964 in Sinop ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. Because of his many years of work for Fenerbahçe Istanbul and as a home-grown man, his name is associated with this club.

Player career

Özdemir began with club football in the youth department of Fenerbahçe Istanbul and was added to the professional squad for the 1982/83 season by head coach Branko Stanković . He made his debut in the league game on September 26, 1982 against Samsunspor . In this game he played the entire length of the game. By the end of the season, he had played six more competitive games for his club. This season, Özdemir's team prevailed in the Turkish championship against their worst rival Trabzonspor and won the title again after five years. In addition, the team won the Turkish Cup this season, making it a Turkish double winner for the third time in the club's history . Özdemir won his first two titles at club level. They also won the President's Cup and the Navy Cup this season . In the following season Özdemir increased his stakes to 14 games. With his club he was runner-up behind Trabzonspor, but was able to win the Navy and Presidential Cup again. Özdemir conquered a regular place in phases in the 1984/85 season and also became a national player. He won his second Turkish championship with his club and won the Navy Cup for the third time.

In the seasons 1985/86 and 1986/87 Özdemir developed into an important part of the team. His team, on the other hand, had no chance in the championship and was only able to win the pre-season TSYD Istanbul Cup twice as a title . In the two-point rule valid at the time , the team occupied table positions with a point difference of well over 14 points to the respective champions. In these seasons, the club also missed qualifying for the European cup competitions. During the 1986/87 season it became apparent that Fenerbahçe would not qualify for any European cup competition via the league placement, so the team focused on the Turkish cup competition. Here the team met in the quarter-finals against the then strong Samsunspor club . This club had won the last three games against Fenerbahçe and in two of these games Fenerbahçe even with 0: 4 inflicted two of the bitterest defeats in the club's history. In the first game of the cup quarter-finals, Özdemir's team Samsunspor lost 1-0 away. As a result, the club risked qualifying for the European cup competitions on the one hand and experienced the fourth defeat in a row against Samsunspor on the other. Under these tense circumstances, both teams delivered a thrilling game in the second leg, which was played in front of a home crowd on April 1, 1987. Fenerbahçe missed several high profile chances and missed a penalty. The game ended 0-0, which means that Samsunspor qualified for the semi-finals due to the first leg victory. Immediately after the final whistle there was a scuffle between players from both teams. The goalkeeper of Samsunspor, Fatih Uraz , had been too carefree and happy about the semi-finals that he caused the resentment of some Fenerbahçe players. This circumstance caused tumultuous scenes on the field, in which Özdemir also took part. In front of the camera, Özdemir ran up to Kenan Topçu, lying face down on the field . Following these events, the Turkish Football Association announced harsh penalties against Fenerbahçe and some of its players.

As a result, Özdemir and other teammates such as Müjdat Yetkiner , Sedat Karaoğlu and Abdülkerim Durmaz were suspended from the national football association for three and four months respectively. Since the game-free time from the end of the 1986/87 season to the beginning of the 1987/88 season was also counted for the game suspension, Özdemir could be used again from the 4th day of play. In his first game after the suspension, Özdemir hit the headlines again. In the home game of September 20, 1987, Fenerbahçe lost 4-0 against Eskişehirspor in front of their home crowd and experienced a bitter home defeat. After this game, the spectators stormed the field and then besieged the stadium. All Fenerbahçe players had to be brought out of the stadium under police protection. As part of the defense, Özdemir was portrayed as one of the main culprits in this defeat. After this game he kept his regular place, but he was questioned together with some teammates within the club. The club official Hüseyin Kozluca accused Özdemir, together with Karaoğlu, Durmaz and Önder Çakar of match-fixing . These players then said they would sue Kozluca for character assassination. Thus, the situation worsened. After the team suffered another historic home defeat in the cup game against Sakaryaspor 5-1, the club's leadership gathered for a special meeting. In this session the players Yetkiner, Karaoğlu, Durmaz, Özdemir and Zafer Tüzün were suspended without notice. In addition, it was decided to sell these players at the end of the season.

After the end of the season, the players concerned tried unsuccessfully to force their pardon. Since Özdemir's contract also ended in the summer of 1988, he apologized from the club's management. This, however, made his contract extension and pardon of head coach Todor Veselinović dependent. Instead, Fenerbahce suggested he pay the transfer fee himself and then move to any club of his choice. Before the start of the next season he was pardoned and took part in training. In September 1988 Fenerbahçe announced to have loaned Özdemir to Kahramanmaraşspor . After this change did not take place, Özdemir was loaned to Sakaryaspor for a sum of 25 million Turkish lira . Özdemir played for Sakaryaspor for a season and played 23 competitive games here. In the summer of 1989 he returned to Fenerbahçe and was included in the team squad here. After he started the new season at this club and had played eight competitive games by mid-October 1989, he was loaned to Adana Demirspor for a sum of 90 million lira .

After a season with Demirspor, Özdemir came back to Fenerbahçe in the summer of 1990, fought for a regular place and made it back to the national team. For the second half of the season he lost contact with the team and did not play a game until the end of the season. After he sat on the bench for the first half of the 1991/92 season, he was loaned out to Adana Demirspor for the second half of the season.

In the summer of 1992 he left Fenerbahçe for good and moved to Sakaryaspor . For the club, now active in the 2nd Futbol Ligi , he played for the next four seasons. For the 1996/97 season Özdemir moved within the league to Alanyaspor . After this club missed relegation at the end of the season, Özdemir returned to Sakaryaspor. With Sakaryaspor he was playoff winner of the second division season 1997/98 and thus returned after seven years back to the first division . In this league, Özdemir played 20 league games for his club and was relegated with it after just one season. After Özdemir had spent the 1999/2000 season on loan at Sapancaspor , he ended his career in the summer of 2000.

National team

Özdemir's national team career began in 1980 during his time in the youth department of Fenerbahçe Istanbul with a commitment for the Turkish U-21 national team. After he had completed three more games for this until 1982, he began playing for the Turkish U-21 national team from 1983 .

In 1985 he was nominated by Kálmán Mészöly , the head coach of the Turkish national team , as part of a World Cup qualifying match against Northern Ireland for the international squad. It was in this game that Özdemir also made his international debut. In 1990 he was nominated for a test match against the Hungarian A selection for the second and last time. In this game, Özdemir then completed his second and last international match.

Coaching career

Immediately after his football career, Özdemir began working as a coach. He worked as an assistant coach at Sakaryaspor and Sapancaspor. Then he began to look after the reserve team Fenerbahçe Istanbul. He carried out this activity until 2005 and then took over other junior teams in Fenerbahçes.

In the summer of 2009 Özdemir left Fenerbahçe and worked successively at Hacettepe SK and Bugsaş Spor as a youth coach .

For the second half of the 2011/12 season he returned to Fenerbahçe and began the reserve team of the club, the Fenerbahçe A2 , as head coach. He led this to the championship of the A2 Ligi in the 2013/14 season .
