Family coat of arms of the Báthory

The Báthory were a noble family in Hungary who owned fiefs and castles all over the country. They provided a king of Poland , various voivods of Transylvania , a palatine of Hungary , bishops and royal judges. In the 16th and 17th centuries you were involved in a long-lasting power struggle with the House of Habsburg over Hungary , Transylvania and once also Poland , which was fought out sometimes with political, sometimes with military means and in which the House of Báthory was ultimately defeated. In the course of these disputes, the arrest and detention of Elisabeth Báthory is said to have been carried out, around whom the legends as the "blood countess" later grew.

coat of arms

The family coat of arms of the Báthory de Somlyó et Ecsed shows three forward-facing silver cross points in red. On the helmet with red and silver covers a flight marked like the shield . Later the transverse points (sometimes interpreted as wolf or dragon teeth) also pointed backwards. The wing on the helmet was then also shown in black and the number of helmets doubled to two identical, facing ones. A green dragon as a shield holder .
