House of 1000 Corpses is a 2002 horror film directed by Andy Gould . It was directed by director and musician Rob Zombie , who also wrote the script and created the complete soundtrack for the film.
action
Four teenagers are driving on the streets of America. When they run out of gas, they are forced to stop at Captain Spaulding's gas station , who also runs a monstrosity museum and a freakshow . Jerry decides to buy tickets to this museum for himself and his friends. Captain Spaulding, who stands out because of his peculiar clothing and who wears a clown costume for work, tells them about the former local serial killer Dr. Satan . Jerry is thrilled and persuades the others to go looking for a tree that Dr. Satan was allegedly hanged. On the way there, they take an attractive hitchhiker with them in their car and end up in the house of the Firefly family because of a breakdown , whose members initially seem strange but not threatening.
On the night of Halloween , the youngsters are tortured and murdered by the psychopaths . House of 1000 Corpses comes to an end that merges into a kind of spiral at the beginning of the film and suggests that the killing will continue.
backgrounds
- The film was released uncut in German cinemas in 2003 in the version approved for ages 18 and over, and later both in a heavily cut FSK -18 version that was displayed in department stores and in a version with SPIO / JK symbols, which are identical with the theatrical version. Indexing was lifted in autumn 2018.
- Rob Zombie takes up typical features of horror and splatter films and quotes - not least in the choice of his actors - various other genre films. Similar to Natural Born Killers (1994), for example, cuts are often made every millisecond or a negative effect is used.
- The main roles are named after Groucho Marx film characters.
- There are various allusions to the "Dark Universe" by Universal Pictures in the film. For example, in Captain Spalding's shop, different heads of the creatures are displayed on a shelf (wolf man, fish man, etc.). Among other things, in the room with the tortured Jerry is a large wall poster of "Creature from the Black Lagoon".
Reviews
- Frank Scheck ( The Hollywood Reporter ) wrote that the film lives from the spirit, but not from the quality of its role models.
- In JoBlo.com it was said that the film contains the right mix of creepy atmosphere, nervous laughter and equitable terror to fans of the macabre zufriedenzustimmen.
- Clint Morris ( Film Threat ) panned the film. The film is a waste of 1½ hours and one would wait in vain for an action.
- James Brundage ( Filmcritic.com ) complained that the film is neither a good horror film nor a satire. The horror images would be boring in the long run and the film worked with cheap tricks. It wouldn't be worth looking at. "House of 1000 Corpses is probably the scariest horror movie I've ever seen."
- Cinema : “That the familiar story seems bumpy is not only due to the missing 17 minutes in the theatrical version. It is also due to the impetuous staging of the horror fan Zombie. Zombie indulges in splatter excesses in a shrill mix of genre recites, confused film format changes and rehearsed scenes from classic horror films. Despite exaggerated experimentation, he succeeds in creating disturbing and brilliant images, especially in the finale. It looks as if apocalypse painter Hieronymus Bosch staged a Marilyn Manson video . Conclusion: The " Natural Born Killers " among the horror films! Bizarre tour de force for fans of the genre. "
- Fritz Göttler from the Süddeutsche Zeitung judged the film as “wild, aggressive, bloody, ruthless and tasteless. The violence of the degenerate monsters, the butchers and the cannibals, is defensive this time. They defend themselves against being made into a show object, or rather an object of study, the academic form of exhibitionism. "
- Lexicon of international film : “A repulsive horror film that refers to the harsh horror thrillers of the 1970s without ever reaching their formal density. The bloodthirsty panopticon of quotes, bizarre figures and bizarre atrocities shows no interest in the figures that are treated like slaughter cattle. "
- Guylaine Cadorette from hollywood.com : “House of 1000 Corpses lacks horror and tension, two vital elements in any good horror thriller. But while it fails to scare, it successfully causes nausea. "
- Walter Chaw of Film Freak Central : "A rare film that strives for cult status and will most likely achieve it."
- Peter Müller from Berliner Morgenpost sees Haus der 1000 Leichen as “the ambitious nothingness of a B-picture-loving Gothic guru who spent most of his life in long nights full of metal music, hardcore comics and horror films. Apart from exhausted exhausted effects, fanciful disgusting backdrops and hectically cut, technically alienated images, the film has nothing to offer. "
Awards
- The film won the Portuguese film prize Fantasporto in the category Best Special Effects and was nominated for Best Film.

In 2005 the sequel The Devil's Rejects was created , in which three members of the psychopath family play the main roles.
