life and career

Haig first appeared as a drummer in 1958 when the band T-Birds recorded the single Full House. While participating in a high school theater production, the attending Hollywood actor Dennis Morgan encouraged him to pursue an acting career, which he embarked on after graduating from high school and studying acting at the Pasadena Playhouse . From the early 1960s he was involved in more than 140 film and television productions. As a guest star, Haig has appeared in episodes of popular television series such as Spaceship Enterprise , Batman , Smoking Colts , Cobra, Take Over , Charlie's Angels , Fantasy Island ,A Duke rarely comes up alone , The A-Team and MacGyver . Haig had a television lead role between 1978 and 1981 as the villain in the children's series Jason of Star Command .

In films like THX 1138 by George Lucas or the James Bond film Diamantenfieber , Haig was limited to small roles for a long time. In the 1970s he appeared several times under the direction of his friend Jack Hill in his Blaxploitation films at the side of Pam Grier , through which he received a certain amount of attention as a film actor.

The tall, bald headed Haig played villains and criminals so often that he felt bored of repeating this type of role and therefore withdrew from acting for some time in the 1990s. During this temporary retirement, he turned down the role of Marsellus Wallace in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994), which he later regretted. Three years later he was still in front of the camera for Tarantino when he wrote the character of the judge in Jackie Brown especially for him. With this portrayal, Haig returned to the film business after a five-year break.

As brightly made-up, murderous clown Captain Spaulding , he was seen in the Rob zombie films House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects , probably his best-known role. He took on this role again in 2019 in Rob Zombie's horror film 3 from Hell , which became one of the last films he completed before his death. In particular through the role of Captain Spaulding, but also through striking appearances in numerous other horror films, he achieved the status of an icon among many horror film fans. In Brotherhood of Blood , he played a vampire for the first time in his long career in 2007.
