In 1971 he was a member of the Stuart Gordons Organic Theater ensemble, where he appeared in the three-part science fiction saga Warp! with, which became a cult success in Chicago and even made a brief guest appearance on New York's Broadway in 1973 . The Organics , which later brought the first professional production of a play by David Mamet ( Sexual Perversity in Chicago , June 1974) to the stage, included, in addition to Towles, actors such as John Heard , Dennis Franz , Bruce Taylor , Joe Mantegna and Warren Casey . Towles was a member of the ensemble until the 1980s, but also played in other theaters, such as in 1987 at The Goodman Theater of the Art Institute of Chicago in a production of Georges Feydeau's A Flea in Her Ear (La puce à l'oreille) .
Towles had his first major (and at the same time his most famous) film role in John McNaughton's first director Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer , in which Towles played a character based on the real serial killer Ottis Toole . The low-budget film, shot in 1986, was only released in 1989 and subsequently developed into a cult film over the years. Towles was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his performance at the 1991 Independent Spirit Awards .
This entry was followed by roles in splatter films , which were directed by renowned genre directors such as Tom Savini or Towles' Organics colleague Stuart Gordon, who had switched to the film business . He later became a regular cast in the films Rob Zombies . He was also seen in some Hollywood mainstream productions, but especially in episode roles in television series such as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Seinfeld , NYPD Blue , LA Law , Emergency Room (ER) , Hinterm Mond immediately left (3rd Rock from the Sun ) , Star Trek: Voyager , Profiler , Pretender , Firefly - Der Aufbruch der Serenity , CSI: On the trail of the perpetrators and Malcolm in the middle (Malcolm in the Middle) .
