history

Church building

In 1896 a church building association was founded with the aim of building a church in Klinkum. Until now, the Klinkum believers had to go to church in neighboring Wegberg. In 1897 the Klinkumer Franz Wilhelm Schrötgens donated the building plot. At this time, however, the Wegberg parish raised strong opposition to the plans to build a church in Klinkum, as it was therefore foreseeable that Klinkum would sooner or later be separated from the Wegberg mother parish and the parish of St. Peter and Paul in Wegberg would thus generate income were missing. It was not until 1901 that the church building association found an agreement with the parish, so that planning could begin.

The Klinkum Church was built between 1902 and 1904 according to plans by the Aachen architect Daniels. The foundation stone was laid on June 29, 1902, and the shell was completed in 1903. In the course of 1904 the church was completed. The consecration took place on June 29, 1905 by the Cologne auxiliary bishop Joseph Müller . In 1912 the church was given the status of a parish church , which it lost again in 2013. Since then, the church has been a branch church.

Parish

Until 1912 Klinkum belonged to the parish of St. Peter and Paul Wegberg. Since the population of Klinkum strove to become an independent parish, they were first raised to a chapel parish on October 1, 1909, which made property self-administration possible independently of the responsible Wegberg parish. The place had a rector since 1907 . In December 1912, Klinkum was finally raised to an independent parish.

On January 1, 2013 the parish was dissolved and merged with the other former Wegberg parishes to form the new large parish of St. Martin Wegberg.

Furnishing

In the interior there is a small remnant of the painting from the years 1920 and 1921, which was made by the Aachen painter Assenmacher. In addition, the pews in the interior from the time it was built and the plaster of paris Way of the Cross from the same period have been preserved. The wooden pulpit dates from 1936. Four depictions of Christ, Peter, Paul and Boniface have been incorporated into it. There is also a font from French Savonnières with a brass lid in neo-Gothic shapes in the church. It was made in the 1900s or 1910s. A richly carved wooden confessional from 1904 has also been preserved from the original furnishings. The organ from 1978 is the work of the organ building company Gebrüder Stockmann from Werl . The people's altar was erected in 1972 based on a design by the Cologne artist Friedel Denecke. Some of the windows were created by Ernst Jansen-Winkeln in 1955 and 1963.

Bells

In 1909 the renowned Otto bell foundry from Hemelingen / Bremen cast four bronze bells for the parish in Klinkum. The community was able to keep the bronze bells from the construction period through two world wars.
