Heiligenstein is one of three districts of the local community Römerberg in the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . Until 1969 it was an independent community.

location

Heiligenstein lies in the Upper Rhine Plain in the middle of the local community. In the meantime, the place has grown together structurally with the neighboring town of Berghausen , so that spatial separation is no longer possible. Heiligenstein includes the Fahrweg , Heiligensteiner Straße , Kirchenweg and Lingenfelder Straße .

history

Heiligenstein was built around 500 AD and was probably founded by the Franks . Until the French Revolution , the place belonged to the Speyer monastery , within which the place was temporarily subordinate to the Deidesheim office and temporarily to the Marientraut office . From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Heiligenstein was incorporated into the Canton of Speyer . During this time, the place was the seat of a Mairie , to which Harthausen also belonged. In 1815 the place had 520 inhabitants. In the same year, Austria was struck. Just one year later, the place changed to the Kingdom of Bavaria . From 1818 to 1862 he was a member of the Landkommissariat Speyer ; from this the district office of Speyer emerged.

In 1928 Heiligenstein had 1,392 inhabitants who lived in 231 residential buildings. The Catholics owned a local parish at the time, while the Protestants belonged to that of Mechtersheim . From 1939 the place was part of the district of Speyer . After the Second World War , Heiligenstein became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In the course of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , Heiligenstein was merged with the neighboring communities of Mechtersheim and Berghausen to form the new local community Römerberg (Pfalz) on June 7, 1969 . At the same time, the place changed to the district of Ludwigshafen am Rhein , which has been called Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis since 2004 .

Culture

There are a total of 13 objects on site that are listed buildings. The two lime trees in the cemetery to the west of the settlement area are also a natural monument .

Infrastructure

Heiligenstein has a train station on the Schifferstadt – Wörth railway line on the southwestern edge of the settlement . This was opened in 1864 when the line that had previously ended in Speyer was extended to Germersheim . The connection to Wörth took place in 1876. In the meantime, the former station is only a stopping point in operational terms; since 2006 it has been part of the RheinNeckar S-Bahn . The former station building and the goods shed no longer have any significance for rail operations. In addition, the bus line 568 of the Rhein-Neckar transport association runs via Heiligenstein, which connects the place with Speyer and Mechtersheim. Federal highway 9 also runs around two kilometers west of the settlement area .
