The Heinrich Emanuel Merck School in Darmstadt ( HEMS for short ) is a vocational school that was newly founded in 1985 . It is part of the vocational school center north and is close to the Waldspirale . The school was named after the founder of the pharmaceutical company of the same name . On February 2, 2016, the Hessian Minister of Education, Ralph Alexander Lorz, awarded the HEMS the status of an “Independent Vocational School”.

Educational offer

history

The Heinrich Emanuel Merck School has its historical origins in a school founded in 1874, which for the first time offered school-based training that comprised 4-6 hours per week. It was not until 1887 that a commercial school was established, which was founded by the "Darmstädter Handelsverein". In 1893 this school was taken over by the Chamber of Commerce and existed until 1922. The schooling lasted 3 years and - as today - ran parallel to the vocational training in the company.

"New" school building in Stiftstrasse

post war period

On September 11, 1944, large parts of Darmstadt and the school were destroyed. The bomb attack was u. a. the school archive and the state education authority destroyed, so that there are hardly any documents from the time before the war.

Only on October 19, 1950, the magistrate issued a resolution to name it: "Heinrich-Emanuel-Merck-Schule". This decision was made in agreement with the family and the Merck company. On April 1, 1952, the one-year commercial college , which was suspended during the Second World War , reopened.

On November 14, 1956, the new school building in Stiftstrasse was inaugurated and the Festschrift was published.

New foundation and present

Current exterior view of the HEMS

In the 1970s, the city of Darmstadt developed a plan to build a "vocational school center", today's vocational school center north, on a site behind the Rhönring. There, the Martin Behaim School and the Friedrich List School were built in two "blocks". Initially, the Heinrich-Emanuel-Merck-Schule and the Friedrich-List-Schule moved into the second block, but since there was not enough space for two schools, some of the classes were moved back to the old school on Martin-Buber-Straße . The last school to be built was the Heinrich Emanuel Merck School in the third block and moved there on August 1, 1985.

Information technology assistants have been trained in information technology at full school since 1996 . A paradigm shift takes place with the IT apprenticeships that were newly founded in 1997: The introduction of learning fields in place of the subjects, the linkage of economics and technology in job-related lessons and the project organization characterize vocational school teaching in this training area. Since 1998 there has also been a new focus on data processing technology in vocational high school.

In 2009, the exhibition project Mute Voices made a brief stop at the Heinrich Emanuel Merck School. In June 2015, the HEMS celebrated its 15th anniversary “International Vocational Training” within the framework of the EU vocational training programs Leonardo da Vinci and Erasmus + .

Since 2015 it has been the second vocational school in Germany to offer the dual training occupation of mathematical-technical software developer . Furthermore, the focus on nutrition and in 2016 the focus on health in the vocational high school was introduced at this time .
