Heinrich Paal (born June 26, 1895 in Rakvere , Estonia Governorate , † December 18, 1941 in Kirow , Soviet Union ) was an Estonian football player and referee , track and field athlete , sports official and bandy player . With the Estonian national team Paal played as team captain in 1920 in the first international match of the Republic of Estonia against a selection from Finland . His brother Rudolf (1897-1934) , who was two years his junior, played with him at his side, for whom it remained an international match. Four years later, Paal played with Estonia at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris . He is still considered to be one of the best Estonian football players before World War II.

Career

In 1913 Paal joined the SK Tallinna Sport from the capital Tallinn , which is about 68 km away from his hometown , in order to be active in this sport. From 1920 Paal played for ten years for the football team of the sports club, with which he was seven times Estonian champion , and was honored individually as top scorer once . With the selection of his home country, he took part in the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. In addition to August Lass , Harald Kaarman and Ernst-Aleksander Joll , he was the most experienced player in the Estonian squad with 10 international appearances under the direction of Ferenc Kónya .

For the national team Paal also played three times in the Baltic Cup in 1928 , 1929 and 1930 . At the second edition in 1929 he was able to celebrate the title with the team. Between 1920 and 1930 Paal completed 37 international matches in which he scored five goals. In 14 international matches he also acted as captain of the national selection.

As a track and field athlete, Paal celebrated several Estonian championships as well as national records in the 5000 and 10,000 meters .

After the end of his active sports career, he worked as a football referee and sports official for the Estonian Football Association. Among other things, he represented Estonia at the FIFA Congress in Paris in 1924.

Heinrich Paal was born in 1895 as the son of Michael Paal and his wife Leena Paal (née Kuuskmann) in Jäneda , a village in the Lääne-Viru district with the capital Rakvere . He was the third of four children. On December 20, 1917, Heinrich married Mathilde Luise Ivanov (1893 - unknown) from Palvere .

As a volunteer , Paal fought for the Estonian Defense Forces in the War of Independence from 1918 to 1920 .

Heinrich Paal , like many other Estonians , was deported to the Stalinist gulag system between 1940 and 1941 after the Soviet occupation of Estonia in World War II . He died in December 1941 at the age of 46 in the POW camp 101 in Kirov .
