Heinrich Maria Schmidt (born February 18, 1809 in Lübeck , † May 3, 1870 in Berlin ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ), actor , director and composer .

Life

Heinrich Schmidt had his tenor voice trained against the wishes of his parents' house, a respected Lübeck merchant, and earned his living as a singing teacher and concert singer. In 1829 he traveled to Vienna to perfect himself with the singer and teacher Giuseppe Ciccimarra . He then received engagements at the Hoftheater Braunschweig (1830-1833), Hoftheater Kassel (1833-1836) and Stadttheater Breslau (1836-1838) before he was committed to the Leipzig City Theater in 1838 , where he was very successful until 1844. Engagements at the Stadttheater Bremen (1844–1845) and Hoftheater Detmold (1845–1847) followed. At Semper's new court opera in Dresden, Schmidt was not only active as a singer from 1847–1850, but also as an actor and director. During his entire career, Schmidt also had guest roles at the most important court theaters of his time a. a. in Berlin and Dresden, but also performed as a concert and oratorio singer. Schmidt composed songs and music for string instruments as well as some operas.

After finishing his engagement in Dresden in 1850, Schmidt returned to his hometown Lübeck, where he worked as a singing teacher and regularly published the work Gesang und Oper . According to the "letter database of the Schumann letter edition", Schmidt is said to have headed the Singakademie and the Liedertafel in Lübeck, and he was a long-time employee of the NZfM ( New Magazine for Music ).

According to Eisenberg, Schmidt is said to have died in an accident in the 1850s, and the German Biographical Encyclopedia (DBE) names Leipzig as the place of death for May 3, 1854. According to the Neue Berliner Musikzeitung , on May 3, 1870, the “ visiting singing teacher MH Schmidt from Lübeck ”.

family

Schmidt was initially married to the actress Anna Western . Their daughter, from Western's first marriage, Sofie (* 1814), trained as a stage actress by her stepfather, became the wife of the actor Johann Heinrich Schmitz . Heinrich Maria Schmidt's son Felix Schmidt (1848–1927) from his marriage to Marie Möllinger, was married to the concert singer Marie Schmidt-Kühne (* 1858). He was a well-known concert bassist and educator.

In particular, the Leipzig opera audience celebrated Heinrich Maria Schmidt as a dramatic singer because of his powerful, persistent and modulatory tenor voice. Schmidt also made a name for himself as an actor because of his versatility and talent for prose and declamation.
