Heinrich Spaemann

Heinrich Spaemann (born July 15, 1903 in Sölde ; † May 1, 2001 in Überlingen ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and writer .

Life

Heinrich Spaemann grew up in Westphalia in a Protestant home. In the 1920s he studied art history in Munich and Berlin . During this time he left the church. He moved to Berlin and became a member of the editorial team of the Socialist monthly magazine . His editorial colleague at the time was Joseph Bloch . Heinrich Spaemann married the dancer Ruth Krämer (1904–1936), a student of Mary Wigman . Their son Robert Spaemann was born on May 5, 1927 . In 1930 the couple entered the Catholic Church in the Benedictine Abbey of Gerleve . In the same year, they had their son baptized . Walter Dirks was godfather .

After the death of his wife in 1936, the widower began studying Catholic theology . On February 28, 1942 , Bishop Clemens August Graf von Galen consecrated him as a priest in Münster and appointed him chaplain to St. Agatha in Dorsten . In 1948, Bishop Michael Keller appointed him spiritual at the Collegium Borromaeum Münster in Münster and religion teacher at the local welfare school (today the Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia ). From 1950 Spaemann worked as rector in the monastery of the Good Shepherd in Münster and in 1955 he was given leave of absence due to illness to Steinfeld in the Eifel , where he was retired in 1963. 1965 Spaemann changes in the former Benedictine - Priory (now Abbey ) to Dinklage and 1969 to the Vianney Hospital in Ueberlingen on Lake Constance . In 1971 Bishop Heinrich Tenhumberg awarded him the title of pastor ; In 1984 Spaemann finally retired. In the 1960s he had joined Charles de Foucauld's Fraternity Jesus Caritas .

In his publications, Heinrich Spaemann commented on problems in politics and the church. His son Robert Spaemann said of the relationship with his father: “Communication between us was not always free of conflicts. Heinrich Spaemann's grave is next to his wife's grave on the enclosure of the Benedictine Abbey of Burg Dinklage Monastery .
