The Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia , in short: KatHO NRW , until August 31, 2008 Catholic University of Applied Sciences North Rhine-Westphalia ( KFH NW ), is a private , state-recognized university.

History, dates and facts

Around 4,700 students are enrolled at the Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia ( KatHO NRW ), around 3,700 of them women (as of 12/2018). You will be accompanied by 112 professors, 13 teaching staff for special tasks, 234 lecturers, 26 academic staff at academic qualification positions (QVM program) and 109 administrative staff. 51 research assistants are employed in third-party funded projects (status: 12/2018). 87% of the university (except for the theology department: 100% sponsorship funding) is refinanced by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in the amount of 16 million euros (as of 2013) from tax revenues. The university's annual budget in 2018 was 22.3 million euros, and third-party funding was around 2.1 million euros.

The KatHO NRW was founded in 1971 as the Katholische Fachhochschule NW (KFH NW) and is one of the universities of applied sciences of the first wave of founding in Germany. It emerged from the amalgamation of 14 higher technical schools for social work, social education and curative education as well as an institute for religious education under Catholic sponsorship. Some of the previous institutions can be traced back to 1916, such as the social women's school in Cologne. The KatHO NRW will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2021.

The founding rector of the university was the long-time vice-president of the German Caritas Association and chairwoman of the German association , welfare officer and economist Teresa Bock .

The university is supported by the (arch) dioceses of Aachen , Essen , Cologne , Münster and Paderborn , which, as shareholders of a non-profit GmbH, are responsible for the university. The headquarters of the sponsoring company, the university management (rectorate) and the central administration are located in Cologne .

KatHO NRW joined the family charter at the university in 2015 . From 2005 to 2015 it was certified as a family-friendly university ( Hertie Foundation ).

The university has an international office that looks after outgoing and incoming programs in cooperation with the internationalization officer.

Locations

The Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia is spread over four locations (departments) in Aachen, Cologne, Münster and Paderborn. At each location there is a social affairs department , in Cologne the health care department (since 1994) and the theology department in Paderborn . The university administration is based in Cologne. In addition to the website at www.katho-nrw.de , an image film each provides information about the four locations - health care , midwifery and social work as part of the studies at KatHO in the university town of Paderborn on YouTube .

The Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia awards the following (state-recognized) degrees:

In addition to the accredited courses, the university offers postgraduate training courses . Integrated into the course, seminars can be completed that prepare for externally certified qualifications or are credited there, e.g. B. in video home training (in cooperation with SPIN NRW eV, Paderborn location) or in the field of sport and social work with the instructor license for mass sports (in cooperation with the State Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia , Paderborn and Münster location).

The German Institute for Applied Nursing Research e. V. (dip) is a non-profit affiliated institute at the Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia in Cologne. The dip was founded in November 1999 as a nursing research institute of the KatHO NRW, as well as four Catholic (technical) universities (Freiburg, Mainz, Munich, Osnabrück-Vechta) and four Catholic associations (German Caritas Association, Catholic Hospital Association of Germany, Caritas Association for Nursing and Social Professions , Catholic Professional Association for Nursing Professions).

International

As the owner of the ERASMUS University Charter, the Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia participates in the EU's Life Long Learning Program and has concluded cooperation agreements with around 30 European partner universities.

On this basis, a program for incoming students is offered together with regional practice partners.

Since 2001 there has been a university partnership between the Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia, Cologne Department, and the University of Bethlehem in Palestine, as well as an exchange project funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The social affairs department in Cologne and Bethlehem University organize student encounters on topics related to social work every year, combined with research projects and video conference seminars.

Since the winter semester 2004/2005, the Aachen department has been offering social work students the qualification in the study program " Euregio - Social Work Certificate". In addition to joint courses at the five cooperating universities in Aachen, Belgium and the Netherlands , the students do an internship in one of the neighboring countries. The participating universities jointly award the Euregio certificate in addition to the Bachelor's degree.

The semester abroad supported by the university, international references with regard to migration and refugee work and also shorter stays abroad with scholarship advice are further international references of the KatHO.
