Heinrich Wilhelm von Schlieffen

Heinrich Wilhelm von Schlieffen (born November 11, 1756 in Köslin , † December 28, 1842 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and director of the disability pension. He was the canon of Halberstadt and majorate on Schlieffenberg , and on April 11, 1812, he and his brothers were raised to the rank of count. His most important achievement was the organization of the disabled after the liberation wars , despite the tight budget situation after the war. Schlieffen was a neighbor of the agricultural economist Thünen , whom he admired.

Life

His parents were Johann Leo von Schlieffen (April 4, 1719 - December 2, 1777) and his wife Dorothea Elisabeth, née von Tuchsen (November 28, 1733 - June 21, 1764). His father was a royal Prussian court and chamber judge as well as a master of Rekow.

Military career

On November 4, 1771 Schlieffen resigned as corporal corporal in the infantry regiment "of roses" the Prussian army . There he became ensign on September 11, 1773 and second lieutenant on August 1, 1778 . As such, he took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 . Schlieffen advanced to staff captain until April 25, 1790 and on January 7, 1792 became adjutant general to his regiment chief General von Brünneck . On June 5, 1792 he became captain and came to the Pomeranian Infantry Inspection as an adjutant. This was followed by a use in the same capacity in the East Prussian infantry inspection from December 16, 1793. On January 19, 1795 he was promoted to major and on August 17, 1795 by King Friedrich Wilhelm II. Appointed governor of Prince Heinrich . After nine years he was assigned to the regiment of the guard on March 20, 1804, retaining his previous pay of 2000 thalers .

As a lieutenant colonel , he was transferred to the "von Borcke" infantry regiment on October 20, 1805 . Schlieffen was given command of a grenadier battalion made up of companies from the regiments "von Owstin" and "von Borcke". During the Fourth Coalition War that followed , Schlieffen fought in the Battle of Auerstedt . After the defeat, he was put on half pay on August 10, 1807 , and on September 4, 1807 he was given the option of staying. On June 27, 1808 he was promoted to colonel and at the end of the year was appointed director of the 4th division of the military-economic department.

With the start of the Wars of Liberation , Schlieffen was appointed major general and director of the disabled on June 15, 1813. In this capacity, he was promoted to lieutenant general on March 30, 1817. Under awarded the Red Eagle , First Class Schlieffen received on 13 June 1825 a pension of 3365 thalers his farewell . For this he received the service cross on November 26, 1825 . He died unmarried and was buried on December 31, 1842 in the Berlin Invalidenfriedhof . Heinrich Wilhelm (* 1790), the son of his brother Johann Ernst Ludwig, became his heir.
