Heinz Becker

Heinz Becker (born March 4, 1948 in Magdeburg , † September 6, 2014 in Göttingen ) was a German surgeon . He held the chair for general and visceral surgery at the University Medical Center of the Georg-August University in Göttingen . His main focus was on the surgical and interdisciplinary treatment of pancreatic cancer , rectal cancer and thyroid diseases .

Live and act

Becker was born as the son of the surgical professor Theo Becker and his wife Helga, geb. Schauwinhold, born and spent his childhood in Magdeburg , Bernburg , Halle and Leipzig . First, on the advice of his father, he began studying physics in Rostock . In 1968 Becker went to the West. From 1969 to 1974 Becker studied human medicine in Erlangen , Düsseldorf , Kiel and Bonn and graduated in 1974 with the state examination.

Becker started out as a medical assistant in internal medicine at the University of Bonn, then moved to the University of Heidelberg , where he was trained in surgery by Fritz Linder . From September 1978 to the end of 1979 Becker spent a research period at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In addition to the specialist certification as a surgeon, Becker acquired the additional designation of vascular surgery . Becker completed his habilitation in 1984. Two years later, Becker followed Hans-Dietrich Röher to Düsseldorf. On August 1, 1994, Becker took over the chair for general and visceral surgery at the University of Göttingen as the successor to Hans-Jürgen Peiper . Due to an illness, Becker handed over the position as head of the department (W3 professorship) to his successor Michael Ghadimi on April 2, 2012 without an advertisement .

Becker has published numerous scientific articles and book chapters. He was a founding member of the German Society for Visceral Surgery. Until the beginning of 2008 he was editor of the journal Visceral Surgery ( Thieme Verlag ). He organized u. a. the Göttingen Laparoscopy Days every several years. From 2007 he was the spokesman for the interdisciplinary clinical research group 179 Biological Basis of Individual Tumor Response in Patients with Rectal Cancer . In 2011 he received the Rudolf Nissen Medal from the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery .

From 1977 Becker was married to Marion, b. Bayer. He had four daughters.
