Heinz Rudolf Sunday

Heinz Rudolf Sonntag (born June 19, 1940 in Neheim ; † August 8, 2015 in Caracas , Venezuela ) was a German sociologist who lived in Latin America for a long time and became famous for his socialist contributions. From 1993 to 1995 he was chairman of the Asociación Latinoamericana de Sociología .

Life

Heinz Rudolf Sonntag was born in Germany. He studied history and philosophy in Münster , Bochum and Vienna , then worked at the social research center at the University of Münster in Dortmund . In this city he married the sociologist and photographer Elena Hochman . In 1964 he graduated with an MA in Münster and obtained his doctorate in social sciences magna cum laude in 1967 in Bochum . His doctoral thesis entitled Marx and Lenin. The sociology of the modern revolution was published in German, Dutch, Swedish and Spanish.

From 1968, Sonntag taught as a lecturer in Venezuela , Chile , the Federal Republic of Germany and France , but returned to Venezuela in 1973. In September 1973 he started as a researcher in the Centro de Estudios del Desarrollo ( CENDES ) of the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas . He was its director in 1983 and again between 1993 and 1997. From 1993 to 1995 he was chairman of the Asociación Latinoamericana de Sociología.

In December 2000, Heinz Sonntag retired , but remained active in research and teaching. He lived in the USA until February 2005 , where he worked at Brown University , Yale University , Amherst College and the University of Massachusetts .

His work includes around 20 books as author and co-author and around 70 articles and essays in different languages. In Germany he is also known as the editor of several books on Che Guevara . In addition to Latin America, he has explored many countries in the world, such as France , Japan , Senegal , England , Austria and Italy .

Political activity

In 2008, Heinz Sonntag became a member of Movimiento 2D (Movement December 2nd), which belonged to the right-wing opposition to the Bolivarian process under President Hugo Chavez . The group refers to the constitutional referendum of December 2, 2007 and sees “democracy and freedom” in Venezuela in decline.
