occupation

Helden in Tirol is the title of an Austrian comedy film by Niki List from 1998 . The production is also seen as a Heimatfilm - parody and music film , as well as an unofficial continuation of the film Müller's office .

Despite the identical title, the plot of the film does not refer to the work Helden in Tirol published by Karl Springenschmid in 1934 .

action

25 years after the death of Lorenz Luftsprung, who owned large parts of the idyllic village of Helden, no legacy is known. Therefore, ownership is to pass to the mayor of the village Adolf Steiner, who is planning to build a tourist paradise. Max Adler, who wants to protect the previously untouched nature of the valley, tries to prevent that. He is supported by the pastor Johannes, the village idiot Kaspar, the castle owner Titania and other residents of the village.

The conflict between the mayor and Max Adler comes to a head in the course of the film. Max discovers that Emma, his great love, is the daughter and thus the heiress of Lorenz Luftsprung. Meanwhile, the mayor and his sons try to get Max out of the way. When Emma is confirmed as heiress by Nancy, the widow of Lorenz Luftsprung, the mayor tries to kill Max and force Emma to marry his son Peter.

Max manages to prevent this forced wedding, the film closes with several happy weddings.

background

Helden in Tirol was published in Austria on October 2, 1998. The film, produced by Cult Movies GmbH, brought 42,788 visitors to the cinemas in Austria.

In 1999 the film was shown at the Berlinale and as Heroes in Tyrol at the 35th Chicago International Film Festival .

After the release, the film was also released on VHS and DVD.

reception

The film was shot differently. Von Helden in Tirol describes the world as a "shrill parody that crumbles the icing of the morbid Austrian soul" and believes that the film "with its wild and elegiac rhythms [...] could at least go down in Austrian film history as the first alpine rock musical" .

The Berliner Zeitung, on the other hand, writes of the production as a “tired and sordid copy” of Müller's office and says that Niki List probably knows nothing about biting satire.

While Helden in Tirol in Austria itself was only moderately successful, the film was "cheered at the Berlinale in February [...]" according to the Stuttgarter Nachrichten .

Awards

In 1999, Helden in Tirol received first prize at the Trento Mountain Film Festival .
