particularities Small remains of the Helfenberg Castle

The Helfenberg is 366.2  m above sea level. NHN high, elongated basalt dome near Wolfhagen in the Kassel district in northern Hesse ( Germany ). The remains of Helfenberg Castle, which was built in the 13th century and destroyed in the same century, are on the unwooded mountain, which is only overgrown by isolated groups of trees and bushes on the slopes .

Geography and natural space

The mountain extends in the north-western part of the Habichtswald Nature Park around 2.5 km east of the core town of Wolfhagen in a north-south direction between the two eastern Wolfhagen districts of Philippinenburg in the south-south-east and Philippinenthal in the north-east; a long saddle separates the north summit from the approximately 2 m less high south summit. To the north the terrain slopes down over the valley of the small Lohbach to the Erpe .

The mountain joins the Isthaberg ( 523.1  m ) to the north-northwest as a spur and forms the northwestern end of the natural area 341.35 “Isthaberg”. This is part of the Wolfhager Hügelland (341.3) in the main unit Ostwaldecker Randsenken (341) of the natural spatial main unit group West Hessisches Bergland (No. 34). In the west, north and east, the Helfenberg is surrounded by the natural area "Altenhasunger Graben" (341.33).

The mountain or hill group of Ofenberg , Festberg , Helfenberg and Isthaberg is also known locally as "Wolfhager Switzerland".

Helfenberg castle ruins

Only ramparts and moats are left of the former Helfenberg Castle. There is hardly any reliable information about the castle. According to Landau , the castle was on the northern tip of the ridge, was enclosed by a deep moat and additionally secured by another moat that cut through the ridge in the middle. The elongated castle stable on the two-topped mountain indicates the former existence of a northern main castle and one or two outer castles .
