Helga Kaffke
Helga Kaffke (born November 18, 1934 in Leipzig ; † November 28, 2017 in Ballycroy , County Mayo , Ireland ) was a German painter and graphic artist .
Life
Helga Kaffke came from a humble background. She attended elementary school in Leipzig and completed an apprenticeship as a photolithographer from 1949 to 1952 . She then worked for three years in her Leipzig training company in the profession she had learned. From 1954 to 1959 Helga Kaffke studied at the University of Graphic and Book Art in Leipzig , among others with Werner Tübke and Gerhard Kurt Müller . From 1959 Helga Kaffke lived as a freelance painter and graphic artist in Leipzig, from 1979 to 1993 in Schwerin , until 2002 in Les Grandes Dalles in Normandy and then in Ballycroy in County Mayo in western Ireland, where she died in 2017 at the age of 83. She has been working in Ireland for several months each year since 1995. In 1962 Helga Kaffke became a member of the Association of Fine Artists of the GDR . Since 1979 she has exhibited regularly at the Schwerin district art exhibitions. During this time she also taught painting as a lecturer at the District Academy of Culture in Schwerin. 1987/1988 Helga Kaffke participated in the Xth art exhibition of the GDR . She designed the wall mosaic of the Fischer and Syner Fru in the Schwerin FDGB vacation home "Fritz Reuter", which was smashed after the fall of the Wall.
Helga Kaffke was widowed and had three children from this marriage. Her second marriage was to the author Gabriele Berthel , with whom she published books together.
