The HELIOS ENDO-Klinik Hamburg is a hospital in the Hamburg district of Altona-Altstadt . It belongs to the Helios clinics and is the largest specialist clinic for bone, joint and spinal surgery in Europe. It is one of the world's leading companies in the field of hip and knee operations. Another focus is the treatment of periprosthetic joint infections.

history

In the 1960s, Hans Wilhelm Buchholz became a pioneer in joint replacement surgery in Germany while working at the St. Georg General Hospital . In the first half of the 1970s he tried to set up a specialist department for joint replacement operations in Hamburg's hospitals. In 1975 these plans took shape when the City of Hamburg abandoned the Wintermoor hospital . Part of the clinic there became the cornerstone for the ENDO clinic: from December 1975 it was used for the further treatment of patients after endoprosthesis operations. The focus of the planned specialist facility was established in 1975 at Holstenstrasse 2 in Hamburg, after the local construction project for a specialist medical center had failed. From March to December 1975 the building was transformed into a hospital. The clinic was moved into on January 1, 1976, and on February 2, 1976 the first patients were admitted. When the company was founded, the Altona site had 190 beds and the Wintermoor site 300 beds.

In 1977 the Department of Neurosurgery was opened. In 1982 the establishment of a bone bank began, five years later that of an autologous blood bank. At the end of 1997 the Wintermoor part of the business was closed. On January 1, 1998, Damp-Holding AG bought the clinic's management company , while ENDO-Klinik, a non-profit operating company, and Damp-Holding AG signed an agency agreement. With the purchase of the Damp Group, the clinic became part of Helios Kliniken GmbH in 2011 .

Medical focus

Since the clinic was founded, the doctors there have performed almost 140,000 joint replacement operations. More than 6,000 joint surgery operations are currently performed each year, and the clinic treats around 7,000 patients annually.

The range of services includes the following areas (as of May 2014):

• Surgical orthopedics: Among other things, this involves replacing knee joints , hip joints , shoulder joints , elbow joints, as well as operations to replace prostheses and interventions that preserve the joints .
• Treatment of periprosthetic infections: Corresponding interventions are carried out to treat bacterial inflammation of a joint replacement.
• Neurosurgery: Interventions on the intervertebral discs , the vertebral arch joints , the sacroiliac joint , the vertebral canal and operations on peripheral nerves are in the foreground.
• Anesthesia and intensive care medicine : This is where therapeutic and diagnostic procedures from intensive care medicine are used, as well as anesthesia procedures and pain treatment procedures - in the latter, multimodal pain therapy is increasingly used .
• Physical and rehabilitation medicine : rehabilitation, further treatment after an operation and physiotherapy are the focus here.

building

By 1974 a "North German Medical Center" was built on the property at Holstenstrasse 2 in Hamburg. However, the project stalled because the sponsoring company in the bankruptcy went. The founders of the ENDO-Klinik around Hans Wilhelm Buchholz took the opportunity to set up the ENDO-Klinik in this unfinished building. When moving into the building, in addition to the clinic, it housed a medical spa center, a surgical accident practice , an X-ray institute, an internal medical practice, a double gynecological practice and a pharmacy. In 1982 the land and the building were acquired.

In the course of the takeover, the Damp Group assured the construction of an extension. The corresponding property, on which a C&A department store had previously been located, was in the immediate vicinity of the ENDO clinic. It was acquired by the management company of the ENDO-Klinik as early as 1993/1994. The architectural planning of the building was carried out by KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten . The foundation stone was laid on September 27, 2007 in the presence of Hamburg's First Mayor Ole von Beust . The official inauguration of the five-story, L-shaped glass building, in which two atriums are cut, took place on May 14, 2009. The public sector contributed 38 million the construction costs of around 60 million euros because the ENDO clinic had meanwhile been included in the Hamburg hospital plan.

The modernization of the old building began in March 2011 . The cost was estimated at 30 million euros. The opening of the ten-story building with its around 24,000 square meters took place on April 14, 2013. Together with the space in the adjacent extension, the clinic has around 44,000 square meters. The facade was adapted to the extension: a light natural stone front was combined with lots of glass and steel.

Functions and memberships

The Helios ENDO-Klinik Hamburg is one of the academic teaching hospitals of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). In addition, over 350 guest doctors from all over the world attend the clinic every year. It is also a plan hospital . The clinic is a member of the International Society of Orthopedic Centers , a medical society that promotes the exchange of experiences and ideas in orthopedic clinics.

The association founded in 1973 (today's name: ENDO Verein eV ) with currently approx. 750 members promotes medical research and training in the areas of the musculoskeletal system and the related scientific areas of basic research.
