The Helix Bridge (formerly also Double Helix Bridge or Doppelhelix Bridge) is a pedestrian bridge that connects the Marina Center with Marina South within Marina Bay of Singapore . It crosses the Marina Channel , which is located shortly after the confluence of the Singapore River in Marina Bay on the border of the Downtown Core and Marina East planning areas . The bridge was officially opened on April 24, 2010, de facto partly before that in the course of the construction work on Marina Bay Sands . The bridge is next to the Benjamin Sheares Bridge . In addition to the “Helix Bridge” for pedestrians, it consists of a parallel vehicle bridge, which was later named Bayfront Bridge . The structure opened on July 18, 2010 to complete the walking trail around Marina Bay.

The architect consortium was formed from an international team of architects from Australia and a local architecture firm ( Architects 61 ). The engineer in charge was Tristram Carfrae from Arup .

From frit glass and perforated metal roofing made along the inner spiral offer during the hot summer days shade for the pedestrians. The bridge has observation decks in four strategic locations that offer an impressive view of the city skyline of Singapore and events in Marina Bay. At night, the bridge is illuminated by a series of lights that are intended to highlight the structure of the double helix and create a special visual experience for visitors.

The four nucleobases of DNA are represented by pairs of brightly colored letters “C” and “G”, as well as “a” and “t” ( cytosine , guanine , adenine and thymine ).

According to the inland traffic authority of the Ministry of Transport, the structure is a world first in architecture and bridge design.

The building won the “World's Best Transport Building” award at the World Architecture Festival Awards in the year it opened.
