Marina Bay Sands is a resort on Singapore's Marina Bay , built by Las Vegas Sands and opened in 2010. The 20 hectare resort was designed by Moshe Safdie Architects. The complex consists of a casino , a hotel , a conference and exhibition center, a shopping center , an art and science museum, two theaters, various catering options, bars and nightclubs and two floating pavilions .

The three 55-storey hotel towers support a 340-meter-long roof garden at a height of 191 meters . Part of the largest public boom platform is a 146 meter long infinity pool . The resort is considered to be the most expensive stand-alone casino complex in the world. Including the land costs, the construction is said to have cost eight billion Singapore dollars (around 4.6 billion euros ).

location

The Marina Bay Sands is located on the Peninsula Marina South between the Bay Marina Bay at the mouth of the Singapore River and the Straits of Singapore . Administratively, the peninsula represents an urban planning area in the Central Region .

architecture

building

The resort was designed by architect and Harvard professor Moshe Safdie , who used stacks of playing cards as a template. The architecture of the resort and significant subsequent design changes were approved by various Feng Shui masters . The locally commissioned architect was Aedas Singapore, the engineering work was carried out by Arup and Parsons Brinkerhoff (MEP).

Model of the project inside the hotel

The building consists of three hotel towers, each with 55 floors, which reached their maximum height of 191 meters in July 2009. The roofs of the three towers are connected by a roof terrace, the so-called Sands SkyPark .

Building with rooftop pool from the air

The viewing platform, which is open to the public, includes a garden with trees on an area of 1.2 hectares and a 146-meter-long infinity pool , which consists of three connected pools and contains 1,424 cubic meters of water. This is the world's largest outdoor swimming pool at such an altitude. From the roof terrace, which offers 3900 people, the visitor has a 360-degree panorama of Singapore. In order to compensate for the movements of the towers caused by the wind, four movement joints were incorporated between the three pools with a width of up to 500 millimeters. Individual lifting supports under each pool should compensate for the expected different settlement of the towers and thus keep the pool horizontal.

use

The complex consists of the hotel with 2561 rooms, a casino with more than 600 tables and 2,500 one -armed bandits , a 120,000 square meter conference and exhibition center, a shopping mall, an art and science museum, two theaters, six restaurants , various other catering options, bars and night clubs, two floating pavilions and an ice rink.

In addition to the garden and swimming pool, the SkyPark also houses restaurants and night clubs. The porches in front of the hotel towers include a theater complex , an event and exhibition complex and the casino. Next to it is the Art Science Museum in the form of a lotus flower with a sliding roof, through which, when closed, water rattles down as a waterfall, onto which laser shows are projected at night when the weather is nice.

Moshe Safdie designed an "art trail" (within the resort Art Path ), the seven installations by five artists, including Sol LeWitt , Antony Gormley and Zheng Chongbin includes. The art objects should play with environmental influences such as light, water and wind.

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands shopping center has nearly 93,000 square meters of retail space with over 300 shops and food stalls. A canal runs the full length of the shopping area in the same style as the Venetian in Las Vegas . Similar to gondola rides, sampan rides are offered to guests and buyers on the canal .

There are two crystal pavilions. Despite a brief legal battle in June 2011, one of the pavilions housed two nightclubs. After the COVID-19 pandemic , Singapore's third Apple Store is to be opened there. The second pavilion houses the largest Louis Vuitton boutique in the world and is located on a floating island of 1,900 m², which is connected to the section of the boutique in The Shoppes via an underwater tunnel . Both pavilions opened in 2011, just before the 2011 Formula 1 season hit the Marina Bay Street Circuit .

Integrated Resorts Singapore Development Plan

Marina Bay Sands is one of two winning proposals for Singapore's first Integrated Resort - the local name for a vacation resort and casino. The second Integrated Resort is the Resorts World Sentosa on the island of Sentosa , which is also a theme park of Universal Studios includes. The two major resorts were designed to ensure the development of Singapore's economy over the next decade. The casinos are licensed for 30 years.

The award was based on four criteria:

  • tourist attraction and contribution
  • architectural concept and design
  • Construction investment
  • Strength of the consortium and the partners.

Award procedure

In the foreground part of the property on which Marina Bay Sands was later built. In the background the financial district of Singapore.

On May 27, 2006 it was announced that Las Vegas Sands would be awarded the contract for the property in the new Marina South business district on Marina Bay. Las Vegas Sands particularly emphasized its strengths in the MICE business area . The company's founder, Sheldon Adelson , was the first to introduce this type of tourism to Las Vegas, which is where his early business successes were based. In addition, the architectural design of the project was praised by local and international architects as being excellent compared to the other projects, particularly in terms of pedestrian traffic and spatial arrangement. In addition, the design fit best into the cityscape of Marina Bay : The architects liked the fact that the hotel towers are set back from the shoreline, which opens up a far-reaching view over the city center and Marina Bay . Singapore's skyline is becoming more appealing and distinctive.

Las Vegas Sands submitted its successful project alone. The original partner City Developments Limited , which was to hold a 15% stake, withdrew in the second phase of the tender. City Developments Limited CEO Kwek Leng Beng stated that the withdrawal had various causes, including timely coordination with various companies in which it is involved and the reluctance of certain investment partners to disclose information for the integrity check required by the Singapore authorities . Despite everything, Kwek Leng Beng stayed with the project as a consultant.

The main contractor for the construction activities was the South Korean company Ssangyong Engineering & Construction . Construction work began in 2006.

Opening and operation

The facility was originally scheduled to open in 2009. In addition to the skyrocketing costs, a lack of personnel and material led to delays from the start. In addition, the financial crisis meant that Las Vegas Sands had to postpone the project.

At the preview opening on April 27, 2010, the casino, parts of the conference center, various shops, a few restaurants, 963 hotel rooms and the Event Plaza opened at a auspicious time at 3:18 pm.

The ongoing work resulted in operational disruptions. The first conference was held at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Center in early April , but half-finished equipment and a power outage disrupted the event, leading to legal action between the organizers and the hotel.

The two-day official opening of the resort began on June 23, 2010. The Sands SkyPark , other shops, restaurants and bars as well as the other hotel rooms were inaugurated . Part of the opening ceremony was the World Championship Climb , with 21 climbers from around the world climbing the building's glass facade to the SkyPark, and a concert with Diana Ross , Kelly Rowland and other artists. The SkyPark was opened to the public on the second day and was visited by 2000 people on that day.

The first performances in the theaters took place at the end of November 2010. Construction of the floating crystal pavilions was scheduled for December 2010. The museum opened on February 19, 2011. In 2011 the musical The Lion King was played in one of the theaters.

The Singapore Tourism Association highlighted the engagement of six award-winning chefs, including Tetsuya Wakuda from Australia, Californian Thomas Keller and Charlie Trotter from Chicago .

In August 2016 were Indonesia six men arrested, which is accused of the IS almost stand and from the about 25 kilometers distant island Batam to have planned out a rocket attack on the hotel.

On April 3, 2019, Sands announced an expansion of its Marina Bay Sands property in Singapore by $ 3.3 billion. The expansion includes the construction of a fourth hotel tower, which is connected via ITE College South with 1,000 luxury suites and an arena with 15,000 seats. The Singaporeans pay the SGD 100 entry fee to gain access to the casino. This was increased to SGD 500 on April 4, 2019.

Following the discovery of confirmed COVID-19 cases at Ce La Vi nightclub on March 24, 2020 and Black Tap at Marina Bay Sands on March 30, 2020, Marina Bay Sands shut down from April 7 to May 4 during the embargo a. The casino will close earlier and reservations for the hotels will not be accepted during this date. The closure will also affect Bayfront Station , the Marina Bay Sands Theater , the ArtScience Museum and the Marina Bay Sands Convention Center .

financing

Including the land costs, the construction is said to have cost 8 billion Singapore dollars (around 4.6 billion euros ).

Las Vegas Sands originally wanted to invest around S $ 3.85 billion  (around € 2 billion) in the project. The land costs of around S $ 1.2 billion (around € 700 million) for the 560,000 m² site were not included. With the labor shortage caused by rising material costs, for example for sand and steel, as well as other large infrastructure and building projects in Singapore, the total costs for the project amounted to around S $ 8 billion (€ 4.5 billion), as Sheldon Adelson said in July 2009 announced. Although the cost of Marina Bay Sands is on a par with MGM's CityCenter project in Las Vegas , the comparison is a bit slow, given that CityCenter is a mixed-use condominium development.

Las Vegas Sands described the company as one of the most challenging developments in the world and certainly the most expensive stand-alone integrated resort property ever built . The resort is expected to generate at least S $ 1 billion in profit annually. In 2014, the casino had around four million visitors and posted $ 3.2 billion in revenue of $ 1.7 billion, making it probably the most profitable single casino in the world. While foreign visitors do not have to pay an entrance fee, the entrance fee for residents of Singapore is $ 100 per day or $ 2000 per year. A total of half a million players visited the casino in June 2010.

Marina Bay Sands is expected to contribute around S $ 2.7 billion to the city-state's economy by 2015, representing 0.8% of Singapore's gross domestic product . The casino directly employs 10,000 people and creates 20,000 jobs in other companies.

Culture

The towers of Marina Bay Sands have been televised multiple times across various The Amazing Race franchises , including the fourth season of the Asian edition of The Amazing Race, the first season of the Australian edition of The Amazing Race, the second season of the Israeli one Edition of The Amazing Race and in the twenty-fifth season of the American original edition of The Amazing Race, all of which included a tightrope task between two towers of the resort. A partially destroyed version of the structure was featured in the 2015 video game Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 , which takes place ten years after a biochemical disaster that has rendered most of the eastern half of Singapore inhospitable. The 2016 trailer for the film Independence Day: Resurgence shows the destruction of property after being caught in the gravity of a hovering alien spacecraft. The build was also featured in the 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians , both in the scenic B-roll of Singapore and in a setting towards the end of the film. Both the finished and partially destroyed versions of the structure are featured in the 2019 animated film Detective Conan : The Fist of the Blue Sapphire in the opening, in various parts of the film, and in the credits.

Transport links

The complex is connected to the Circle Line and the Downtown Line of the MRT subway through the Bayfront station. Access is located directly below the resort. There is also a connection to various bus routes.
