The Hellegrundbach is a 2 km long, north-westerly and orographically right tributary of the Ichte (in the upper Steina , or Steinaer Bach ) in the southern Harz foreland. It flows in the Lower Saxony district of Göttingen , less than 500 m from the border with the Thuringian district of Nordhausen .
course
The Hellegrundbach rises in the Mackenröder forest, which spreads out near the Hohenstein district of Mackenrode . Its source is about 320 m above sea level. NHN and 600 m southwest of the Wittgerode desert , which is 1.1 km west-northwest of Nüxei , a hamlet in the urban area of Bad Sachsa .
The Hellegrundbach runs southwest of the federal highway 243 (section Osterhagen –Nüxei– Mackenrode ) through the nature reserve Steingrabental - Mackenröder Wald , where it flows through some fish ponds.
Finally, the Hellegrundbach flows around 1 km south of Nüxei (at around 248 m above sea level) into the Steina, which flows from the Harz from the north. From here on the Steina bears the name Ichte . East-northeast of the confluence is the Lower Saxony Steinberg ( 274 m ), and beyond the Thuringian border is the Buchenberg ( 320.2 m ) in the west and Mackenrode in the southeast.
Catchment area and tributaries
The catchment area of the Hellegrundbach is 8.0 km². One of its tributaries is a stream, the source of which is about 800 m southwest of the village of Osterhagen (zu Bad Lauterberg ) on the eastern flank of the Jacobsberg ( 363.9 m ) at an altitude of about 340 m . This flows south-eastwards through the nature reserve Steingrabental - Mackenröder Wald through subrosion , so that it is mostly dry due to seepage . Its confluence with the Hellegrundbach lies in the area of the aforementioned fish ponds.
Helmetalbahn
The area near the source of the Hellegrundbach and its tributary coming from Jakobsberg was once crossed by the Helmetalbahn , which led from Osterhagen through the valleys of both streams and through those from Ichte and Helme to Nordhausen . The planned two-track railway line was built in 1944/45 by inmates of the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp and completed as a single track, but was no longer in operation at the end of the Second World War in May 1945. It was then completely dismantled by 1947 due to its location on the inner-German border .
