Helmut Borufka

Helmut Borufka (born October 26, 1918 in Tannwald , Bohemia , † 2003 in Berlin-Köpenick ) was an officer in the National People's Army of the GDR . Most recently he held the rank of lieutenant general .

Military career

The son of a commercial employees learned after his schooling, he in 1937 with the Abitur at the Handelsakadademie in Jablonec graduated as a volunteer the profession of an export trader in agricultural machinery trade. From 1937 to 1938 he did military service as an officer student of the cavalry in the Czechoslovak army . Subsequently, he was initially unemployed and a casual worker. After the occupation of the Sudetenland in October 1938, the smashing of the rest of the Czech Republic and the establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia , Borufka was accepted into the Wehrmacht as a tank grenadier . In 1941 Borufka was promoted to lieutenant in the reserve . In 1943 he was a company commander in command of a radio unit. As a parliamentarian he was taken prisoner by the Soviets in Stalingrad in 1943 . There he joined the National Committee for Free Germany in the same year .

In 1949 Borufka went to the Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ), became a member of the SED and on July 10, 1949 joined the armed organs of the SBZ ( German People's Police ). There he was head of the education and training department in the main training administration until 1951, where he received the rank of chief inspector on January 1, 1950 . He then attended a special course in the Soviet Union from 1951 to 1952. On October 1, 1952, he was awarded the military rank of major general corresponding to a chief inspector . In this rank, Borufka was head of the training and inspection administration at the Kasernierte Volkspolizei (KVP) until 1955 . In 1955 he rose to the position of deputy head of the CIP for training and educational institutions.

From 1956 to 1957 he was head of training in the Ministry of National Defense (MfNV). In 1957 Borufka became deputy chief and chief of staff in the command of the German border police / border troops (later border troops of the GDR ). After a two-year course at the Moscow General Staff Academy, Borufka returned to this post in 1964. In 1965 he became head of administration for schools and further education in the MfNV, which he remained until 1974. In this position he was promoted to lieutenant general on March 1, 1971. From 1974 to December 31, 1982 Borufka was the chief inspector of the NVA. After that he left active service and retired. Borufka is the bearer of the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold, the Scharnhorst Order and various other orders and decorations .

In 1995, Borufka was indicted before the Berlin district court for his involvement in the shooting order and for multiple attempted manslaughter . In 1996 he was declared incapable of standing, but the case was later dropped.
